Receiving a paypal payment - sent to wrong email!

Hey,

So I just sold something on eBay and opted for paypal payments due to their swiftness. The email I had registered with paypal was no longer in use so I changd my defaul address to another email and then deleted the old one.

But I forgot the change the paypal payment address at eBay, and now the payment has been sent to my old address and does not appear in my paypal account.

How would I go about claiming the payment?

I think I'm being given the option to sign up again when I choose to 'view the paypal payment' in eBay, do I have to do that?

Any help is appreciated!

I think your gona have to tell the buyer that he/she sent the payment to the wrong address and will have to sent it to ...........!

I would think they won't be happy about doing this but I'm not sure what else you could do! :(

I had a similair situation just before Christmas last year but in that instance I was the buyer. I sent the paypal payment to the paypal address as shown on the invoice and on my account it showed as 'pending'. After lots of discussions with seller and ebay it transpired that the paypal account was not in use and hadn't been removed from the invoice correctly. However, and here is the frustrating bit, I coudn't reclaim the payment as it was only 'pending' and the seller couldn't refuse the payment as they did not have access to the account.

All that paypal could suggest was that I waited 30 days for the payment to bounce back as unclaimed, and that's what I had to do. As the seller refused to send the item unless I repaid I never got the item so I did make a bad seller claim. After 30 days the payment just bounced back to my paypal account.

So, in answer to the original question you will have to log into your old paypal account and formally reject the payment and ask the seller if they would mind re paying to another account.

  • Eek. Well I emailed the buyer apologetically asking if they could reclaim the funds initially sent, and then pay again to the correct address.

From looking at the help pages of PayPal they should be able to cancel the payment easily as long as it has not been accepted. Being that the address was deleted from my account before it was sent means it shouldn't have been completed right? At least there's no mention of it anywhere in my account history.

    On the topica paypal says:
You may have entered an incorrect email address. To make sure you send money to the correct email address, you can check your account History and cancel the payment if it is incorrect.

So hopefully they'll cancel. Fingers crossed, don't want to end up with negative feedback.

Ask the seller how the payment shows in their payment history..it will either show 'paid' or 'pending'.

If paid then I think they can reclaim just by doing a paypal chargeback thingy, but if pending then see my mail above as this will not bounce back for 30 days.

Also, in your ebay sold history check the item and see whether it shows as 'paid' or not.

Post back here when you have any more info as someone might be able to suggest another way round this.

  • Not quite sure what the status is on their end as I haven't got a response yet, but ebay is telling me;

Status PayPal payment pending. Payment sent to: XXX@XXX [23-Sep-04]

ah, pending is not good that's exactly the situation I described above when I had problems last year.

Unless things have changed a pending payment cannot be recalled. This is cut and pasted from the paypal site, not that I think it helps much at all!

Q What does Pending mean in My eBay or Selling Manager?

A A PayPal purchase may appear as Pending in My eBay or Selling Manager for various reasons, including:

A payment was sent with an unconfirmed address, and the seller needs to log in to PayPal to accept the payment

I also checked out the help index for reclaiming a payment and it seems that a payment can be reclaimed where a paypal account does not exist and the payment remains unclaimed. To be frank I don't fully understand exactly what that means either but I think in this instance the account did exist it is just no longer used.

If it helps PM me with your 'wrong' paypal account details and I'll try sending 1p across and see if I can reclaim it. If I can then you can let your buyer know how to do it.

Can you still access the old e-mail account, if so go to your paypal account, add the old e-mail address again, they will send an e-mail to that address to confirm, click on the link and voila ;D all payments will be added to your paypal account.
Might be worth checking to see if you can access old e-mail account with service provider, you never know, as you do have all your details they might re-instate e-mail for you.

    Hi greatkingbowser,

I have sent the test penny to your account and reclaimed it immediately and without any difficulty. I've sent you a pm with the details so you can pass them onto your buyer.

    Hope that helps the situation.

  • Soolin you're a star!

I wasn't able to check my old email address as it was for an old website that I used to run and so it went when hosting was cancelled.

But hopefully Soolin's scenario has been repeated for the oher buyer so fingers crossed this'll go smoothly. Still haven't heard back from the buyer, though it did take them 4 days after auction close to send the initial paypal, so I shall remain ever patient.

Besides, I want them to get in contact earlier just so they get their item sooner, nothing worse than waiting ages for something off eBay.
