I have never been given a choice of food at a wedding but I am aware there would be some people who it would not be suitable for and would do my best to accommodate. I would ideally only want to have it if it would appeal to the majority of people, hence the question
I thought it was fun and relatively inexpensive and I would prefer to serve 2 inexpensive meals (hog roast or fish and chips are considerations for the evening) and be able to have everyone for the whole day and provide all drinks.
Given the intended venue I feel anything 'posh' would be out of place and am looking for a suitable option for what will have a family hosted party feel.
Any alternative suggestions would be welcomedTrying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

I promise I will not be forgetting the veggie and gluten free options for those who may require them.
As it is a family home I can always have a slow cooker on with a more traditional option and some jacket potatoes in the oven
I want well fed and watered happy guests!0 -

Also hog roasts often turn out to be very expensive, well for the non-main meal.0 -
I also don't understand the thing about expecting a choice - I have only been to one wedding where this happened and it was a HUGELY expensive affair (the brides dad is a super-massive music producer in Americe worth millions - Seal sang at the wedding!! That's how super expensive it was!!) so that for me isn't an issue at all. There will always be someone that doesn't like your choice.
I love the idea of tapas and a meze kind of thing as someone else suggested. However, I know quite a lot of people that don't like paella so it could be risky.
At the end of the day it's your wedding, and you do whatever you feel is right. Can't please all of the people all of the time!!!!0 -
We did give our wedding guests a choice - our reception was in a restaurant (we booked the whole place out) so it was fairly easy to accommodate. We are quite foodie so wanted to offer a choice. That said, I have never been to another wedding where a choice of food has been offered (beyond meat/vegetarian), so it's definitely not common. The food (and wine) was just very important to us.
I think the trouble with paella is it can be quite a specific taste. If you don't like seafood, which many people don't, you are stuck with the frankly, less interesting, vegetarian version. That said I do love the idea of a sharing meal. Could you incorporate the paella as part of a larger mezze/tapas theme?0 -
Traditional paella contains seafood and chicken, so if you dont like seafood, you eat the chicken
Im sure if a vegetarian said they didnt like peppers, people would just say oh well, pick the bits you dont like out then, fussy pants. Why cant meat eaters do the same?0 -
I'd be happy to see Paella served at a wedding. It's something a bit different and I think most people would eat it (even if they wouldn't necessarily choose it in a restaurant.
I also disagree with the person who said it looks 'cheap and nasty'. Paella is a vibrant colourful dish and looks amazing all steaming hot in those big pans.
I'd just be mindful of mixing chicken with seafood only because there's a fair number of people out there with seafood allergies.
I'd say have three options- seafood, meat and veggie just to be on the safe side.
You don't want anyone to have an allergic fit halfway through the speeches!!0 -

Sea food is a bit different to peppers! The flavour permeates the dish - it's really quite a strong flavour. Plus quite a lot of people can be allergic to seafood, so at the very least you would need to make sure you knew if this was the case so they could have the veggie option.0 -

I think paella & tapas sounds brilliant.
I agree about the 3 types, chicken (maybe chorizo) no fish, veggie & traditional with the works.0 -
I love Paella but i know lots of people who don't. I don't think it's a good idea for a wedding really.0
