Thanks for the feedback, it seems a positive as long as there is a non fish option, a veggie option and tapas to snack on0

I'd be seriously disappointed if that was the only choice. If I go to a wedding, I expect there to be a choice of food, especially for 150 guests.
I'd be going to the local takeaway to eat, I can't stand rice (it just screams cheap and cheerful) and if I were a guest, would seem like you can't be bothered to get catering in.
I'm not a fan of sit down meals either, but to expect 150 people to eat exactly the same dish is just naive. A bit of tapas wouldn't cut it either, its not exactly a meal - have you asked your guests if they like paella? Some may not like spicy food (I don't think its spicy but some may), and some may just not like foreign food, especially small kids who tend to throw a wobbler.0 -

I think wedding breakfast has moved away from the traditional 3 course meal. Takeaway type food, that can be eaten standing, so people can mingle more is currently on trend
As a guest, i dont 'expect' to be offered food i like, but i make the best of it. Even if you have a choice of menu, most caterers tend to do 50/50 split, so at some point a guest has to lump it or leave it. For children, paella is actually a good choice, as its rarely made spicy for uk clientele, most kids will eat rice and can pick at the other bits they like such as chicken, peas, etc. most parents would also come prepared with food, if their kids tastes are quite limited. Ive been to weddings where they have catered for kids with nuggets, sausage and chips. not something my kids would opt for given the choice, so again you cant win
Tapas was a suggestion as a canape/snack to see people through until the main. If you knew paella was on the menu and youre not a fan, you could fill up on bread, cheese, ham, etc
I think as long as you have a vegetarian choice and a meaty one, then thats more than acceptable.0 -

I spent almost 20 years working in hotels. It is very unusual to offer a choice beyond meat/vegetarian regardless of the size of the wedding.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

I've never been to a wedding where you get a choice of food...
As above, I've worked many weddings where it was standard dish then some veggies/ special dietary requirements.0 -

This is the MSE forum...
I think paella is a great call! I love it and haven't ever seen it at a wedding so like that it's different.
And I've also been to very few weddings where I've had a a choice beyond just veg/non veg unless it was served as a buffet. A few have sent out menu cards but again, most venues limit the amount of meal choices you are allowed.0 -
Firstly, it's your wedding, do what you want and feel works for you.
My opinion.... Well I'm not keen on paella and my OH doesn't eat rice, so we'd not choose something like that. It is however something that generally as a guest you have little say in so we'd just be happy to be there. I've only been to one wedding that offered menu choices and I'd imagine the whole wedding was extremely expensive. I think I might think it a little odd if it didn't follow some sort of theme-that said, neither of us like sangria or red wine either!
Less people are doing sit down meals-I have attended a wedding where they provided different BBQ type meats (served) and then you helped yourself to salad style dishes ( potato salad, pastas etc). We were all seated at tables and there was no starter ( wasn't needed or missed) and wedding cake was brought around and served instead of pudding. That worked really well.0 -
I love Paella so think this is a great idea.
Don't get the comments about choice, I've never been given a choice and didn't give one to our guests other than a vegetarian one.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I have never been given a choice of food at a wedding but I am aware there would be some people who it would not be suitable for and would do my best to accommodate. I would ideally only want to have it if it would appeal to the majority of people, hence the question
I thought it was fun and relatively inexpensive and I would prefer to serve 2 inexpensive meals (hog roast or fish and chips are considerations for the evening) and be able to have everyone for the whole day and provide all drinks.
Given the intended venue I feel anything 'posh' would be out of place and am looking for a suitable option for what will have a family hosted party feel.
Any alternative suggestions would be welcomed0
