The only reason to go for Windows 8 is if you could find it cheaper than 8.1. (And then take the free upgrade to 8.1.)I wouldn't go for Windows 8; Windows 8.1 is a free update to Windows 8; the difference between 8 and 8.1 is that 8 is really achingly awful and 8.1 is also really awful but slightly less so.
You would have to upgrade from 8 to 8.1 eventually anyway, as Microsoft stop supporting 8.0 at some point (from memory I think Jan 2016?) and support 8.1 only from then on.
Windows 8.1 really isn't that bad - there's a whole bunch of tablet-friendly stuff which doesn't work well on a desktop, but it's easy enough to ignore all that. Almost all of the normal Desktop stuff from Windows 7 is still there, apart from the 'Aero' embellishments (which is no big loss in my view).0 -
