You still need to inform the insurer even if you are not claiming.

    Don't be so silly!

Silly? What about the possibility of a claim by the landowner if a fence or similar was damaged?
OP should report the incident, when a car has gone off the road into a ditch there may well be unseen damage to the underside, suspension etc?

We went past the site again today everything looked fine. There were no fences or other property in the area, only trees.

Anyway, we have reported it now just to be sure.

The outside of the pillar is not where the strength is but it's more of a closing panel like a outer sill the strength is in the panels underneath not visable if these had moved the screen would have cracked to be honest to repair that would be pretty easy only problem being is that to get that piece it's not unheard of having to buy the whole side of the car the B post the lot

Reading through my documents it doesn't seem to be the case...

I would check the policy wording very carefully. Most policies say that you must report all incidents even if they do not lead to a claim. If yours is different from this, then you are fine not reporting. But most do, so I would check and double-check the policy. As others have said, the consequences of getting found out can be severe.

On the other hand, what constitutes an incident? It's a grey area. I touched a fence at work and made a small mark on my rear bumper yesterday. I certainly won't be reporting that. The OP's incident is a little more serious, but there was no injury or damage to anyone else's property, and any damage to the vehicle appears to be minor. Realistically, would anyone here report that? If he had just run off the road and got stuck in some mud but not hit the tree branch, what then?
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
