    Hi all,

Just wanted to remind you that now is the time to start thinking about pickled onions etc in time for christmas.

I've shared my recipe on my blog if you haven't made them before and would like to know how.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

What a great tip. I have two of the smaller ones.

What did you use for the reeds? Bamboo skewers?

I found some spare reeds in the garden centre shop but have seen online some people use bamboo skewers - think I might have used one before now, way back.

Aren't they lovely little bottles - would probably be nice posy vases too, or ink wells - if anyone still uses ink :D

Not that I'm advocating theft but I think you could help yourself to a few of those wooden stirrers in coffee shops and try those.

Well I've decided to bake my first Christmas cake this year........oh no i'm dreading the outcome eeek.... got all the ingredients today (mainly from A**I ) and the fruit is now soaking in the brandy, so it looks like tomorrow is baking day.

Wish me luck, as my hubby says I burn everything, and my motto should be: if it's not black it's not cooked lol

Has everyone on Oldstyle given up on Christmas? Or are they busy preparing?
  • I have made 3 food hampers this week and really pleased with them.

I bought cellophane shrink bags from Am**on, assembled the hampers with wine, chocolates, box of shortbread and several jars of home made preserves and then shrunk the bag with the hairdryer. It looks very professional, if I do say so myself :)

I have used a set of 3 hat boxes I bought from A*da, for each one and have just to put a ribbon on and gift tag. I only give these to people who I know like home made preserves.

I have another 3 to do.

Don't ask me for photographs because I can't do them.:p

  • Mand you won't sound horrible, just be honest. If it is a matter of finance you would be surprised how many others would welcome your suggestion.

We all started last year in that we don't buy for grown up nieces and nephews, and their childen, but we just buy a tub of sweets and a box of biscuits for the family.

Try it I think you will be pleasantly surprised, an awful lot of people are in the same boat.

  • We usually spend Christmas day just with us and the children, the outlaws come on Boxing day.
Christmas day is our chill day when we just have a chill day. Most of the prepping has been done weeks before, brussels, parsnips, mince pies, cheese straws, sausage rolls etc all made ithe first week of December and put in the freezer, potatoes are part cooked and frozen etc, Trifle is made on Christmas Eve, pudding and cake will be made this weekend
All I have to do is put it all together with the Turkey crown and dinner is ready in a couple of hours.
    Then the family wash up.
Some Christmases ago I had been poorly so we all had a pyjama day, it was the best Christmas ever. :D
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
