O/S Daily Thread for Saturday 23rd August

Options
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning :hello:

Hello 1of3 :hello: :coffee: :D

We bought our chickens – a Lavender Orpington and a French Wheaten Maran :D They're a bit shy atm, but lovely. Couldn't resist the bantams so bought two of those as well :D Both Pekins, a chocolate and a lemon. They're so little, with feathered feet – cute cute cute. The chocolate one is very chatty and is going to be trouble, I think. She came in the house and flew up onto the worktop (How? She's so tiny!) and parked herself on the windowsill :D:D As soon as I can get them to stand still I'll take some pics. There were loads of seramas running about, obviously as soon as they're available I'll be needing some :D

I want to make a jumper and cardigan but don't know how to crochet them. I've looked at patterns but most aren't my style – I really don't want to look like a 70s throwback who's been caught in the middle of an explosion in a yarn factory :D

Master tru has started building a small shed for all his tools. This has made my washing lines shorter, which isn't a problem in summer because the washing dries so quickly. But I'm going to end up with piles of wet washing soon because there's nowhere to dry it all. Winter will be OK, the washing will dry on the radiators but autumn and early spring will be a pain. I like my washing hidden away while it's drying so I don't want a long line stretching down the garden or a rotary in the middle. Not quite sure what the answer is really :rotfl:

I'm not going to get much done for the next few days, I'll mostly be on chicken watch :D The plan was for the newbies to meet the oldies through the fence today, but two of the newbies have already managed to get into the main run and halfway up the willow tree. They're supposed to stay seperate for 10 days but that's just not going to happen :D

:hello: mornin', everybody - fed up trying to get back to sleep so decided to get up :(.

Hope nobody minds me starting us off this morning - fingers crossed that I've 'done it right' :undecided.

After my day with dgs1, I was cream-crackered and went to bed just after 10 last night - big mistake! Was up around 5 times during the night for the loo and then couldn't get back to sleep again after 5. We've got an 'extremely energetic' dgs3 later this afternoon for another 'overnighter' - so no doubt, I'll be in bed early again tonight .

Pleased that you're feeling a bit better, TTFTM - but please don't rush things too much. At least it's the Bank Holiday Weekend, so you've got another couple of days recuperation before going back into work again.
Enjoy your 'dinner party', hilly. Good luck with OH doing your kitchen ;).
jlhmd - another with diy going on - hope yours goes well too :). Well done on the Spinach Soup - not exactly 'my thing' either, but sounds like you enjoyed it :D. Good thread link! You'll definitely need sugar/sweetener/other sweet fruit with the rhubarb - I often use sweet eating apples in with mine. But taste it before putting the crumble on the top :).
:j well done on getting your 'Next' refund sorted, caz - and that you got the necklace you spotted.
Julie - hey, you got a text :j! Bet that's a lot more than some other mum's got ;). That's a boy who knows enough to reassure his mum - he's a credit to you!
dandy-candy - hope you get DD's passport sorted out!
Judi - I don't know how these young mums cope when having to take kiddies to childcare before going off to work each day - just getting them ready to get them over the doorstep can be exhausting itself, without having to sort yourself out as well, and then doing a day's work as whew.gif.
lynsayjane - hope you manage to sort out the predicament surrounding your bf's transport problem. I'll keep 'schtum' on my opinion, as I've been stung in the past :(.
Gers - Wow, your friends must be very 'hardy folk' to be swimming around Loch Lomond ! Hope you enjoy your day watching them - I know I definitely wouldn't be joining them in the water :rotfl:.
carolbee - lots of CS won't take video tapes these days. We DID stop accepting them, as we'd kinda 'stockpiled', but I noticed that we've had quite a few back in again AND they've been selling all over again. Not sure why that is shrug.gif - maybe because we're the only one around here that's doing them now. Might be worth your while phoning a couple of them to ask BEFORE you go to the trouble of carting them down to the shops.
elona - hope OH's apt at hospital goes well for him (((hugs))) to you both.
Enjoy your time with dgk's this weekend, Hester :j.

Ended up trailing around a couple of museums in Liverpool with dgs1 yesterday. Guess who dozed off on the journey back to St.Helens (an hour and a quarter on a bus that seemed to stop at every stop!) with him! Once we sat down, my knees/ankles were killing me - and the back of the bus was roasting hot - well that's MY excuse, and I'm sticking to it :o.

Spent a lovely hour chatting with DD when I went to 'drop him off' - hardly got to see anything of her these holidays .............. :( - she'd been out for school uniforms while I'd had him off her hands. She'd also taken dgd1 (16) for an interview about 'an apprenticeship' - has now decided that she'd like to work towards being 'an accountant' ............. Possibly just a tad ambitious, but maybe I'm under-estimating her - hope she can achieve it :).

Got back home and did Turkey Stir-Fry with Sweet Chilli and Garlic Sauce and noodles. Don't think it really needed the noodles cos I felt rather bloated afterwards :o.

Plans for today include:
Have a 'wakey-up shower'.
Get out to the shops early - BEFORE Bouncing Billy arrives! I'm definitely not taking him with me nono.gif. Need to get him a birthday present - I've been told he's into 'minions' - whatever those are :undecided! Just googled them .

Ok then it's time for another coffee.gif and a nice piece of toast  for breakfast - then I'll head for the shower.

HSgentletranscrop.png to all who need one.

Have a good OS day, everybody - luv Lilyplonk xxx

Good morning everyone...all quiet here.

Sky is sort of greyish today though there was a spectacular sunset last night and I sat out until late watching the pinkness over Jura. Only the clatter of geese to break the silence.

I got my dates wrong for this bank holiday as 1) I thought it was next weekend and 2) we don't have it here, as a result I've got myself double booked for today. It's a little embarrassing, I should be in two different places which are two hours driving apart. May just hide under the duvet!

Got packing to do for next week and sorting out work papers too. I was so chuffed to find that I had backed up some old old resources which are now perfect again. Nobody else had them so I sat and searched through a series of external hard drives til I found them.

Bacon and eggs for breakfast. Got some fresh eggs from the farmer yesterday - they've got loads of new baby chicks who wander around looking just adorable.

Hope everyone is doing OK and hanging on.

Happy Saturday.

PS - Lilyplonk... It's the Great Scottish Swim event at Loch Lomond, about 2,500 people wearing wetsuits and hats doing three different distances open water swimming at it's coldest in the UK.

Good morning everyone,

Just a quickie as I am having to type this on my tablet as my poor computer is packed away. We are about halfway through the decorating and although it looks lovely so far I am struggling with the chaos.

Lovely to see more new faces here too. Well hubby has just got up so I guess we will be starting again. Wish me luck!

Morning everyone :)

Didn't really sleep well last night so feeling pretty tired still. Have settled myself in the kitchen so as not to disturb OH or anyone else plus the kettle is here so I can have tea on tap :D

Lily the spinach soup is delicious. I'm going to make some more today for lunch. There are still little bits of spinach in there, even after blending but it is just so tasty :) Good luck with your energetic grandson. My Laddo is on the go all the time, very energetic so can understand why you would be in bed for 10 :D

Thanks for the rhubarb crumble advice. I've not used it before but I'm sure my lot would like maybe an apple & rhubarb crumble.

I would love to keep chickens but not sure on the practicalities or even if we have enough space. Fresh eggs would be amazing so it is something to consider. Can't wait to see your pictures tru :)

I persuaded OH to order an electricity monitor last night so I can see what is using up all the electricity. Hopefully we can cut back in this area and I have been nagging everyone to turn things off if they are not using them. Honestly the amount of times I've found the lights blazing and no-one in there it's getting annoying. I don't want to turn into a nagging, yelling mummy but I do want them to understand that I am serious about cutting back.

Something I read on the Simplifying Life thread was about using actual cash rather than your card when you go shopping. I was thinking about this during the night and it makes sense. I am trying to cut our shopping budget but failing miserably, I did try joining in the grocery challenge but ended up spending more so never went back to the thread :o:o:o If I only take cash when shopping, I can't spend more than I have.

Jobs for today: My mom did the ironing for me yesterday so I need to put that away. There's a wash in the machine already but bedsheets need changing throughout the day. I want to give both bathrooms a good clean although one is next door to where OH is sanding the floorboards so dust is going to get in there.

I need to get the bread maker going and it's HM pizza tonight so I need to make the dough and the sauce. I'm going to make some more of the spinach soup and want to make this cake for after pizza:

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=385480&postcount=18

OH needs to get on with the sanding so M.I.L has agreed to take the kids for a couple of hours. Youngest DD has asthma so it will be better if she's not here whilst he gets on with it. Taking up the carpet and varnishing the floor has turned into a bigger job than I thought it would

Sorry for my waffling on :o:o but that's about all for now. Hope you all have a great day :)

Morning all :)

Dumpling and jihmd666- good luck with the decorating!
LW- I visit loads of different pharmacies so none of the know me :/ luckily I remembered on of DD friends mums is a dentist so will ask her :)
Elona- I'm so pleased they are still working at a plan for DH x
Tru- can't wait to see pics of your chooks!
Lilyplonk- have a good day with the little one. Can you watch a DVD together and accidently nod off? ;)

Started on a small dose of anti depressants yesterday as after the health scare I realised how fragile I'm feeling at the moment. They will give me a couple of bleurgh weeks, but then I should be ok :)

DH got in late so hasn't fixed Hoover yet, I'm hoping to get him to do it before he leaves this morning. I did manage to sweep the hard floors, do 3 loads of washing and change sheets tho! Today I will do bits of house I missed and try to start up my daily exercising - I've been very slack :naughty:

Roast chicken dinner tonight, just need to pick up some more veg to go with it.

Have a good day all, hugs to those in need x

Morning All

Woke up at 5.30, tried to get back to sleep but no joy. Once my mind starts whirring there's no chance!

Welcome to 1of3.

Went on a mammoth hunt for house stuff yesterday. DD saw some flooring she likes and chose the doors for her wardrobes, just hoping the builder will be able to cut them for the slope in the ceiling. I also found some tiles I like for the bathroom, both floor and wall.

Ended up in Ike@ for something to eat, it was DDs turn to pay - we both had the chickpea biryani at the costly price of £2.25 each! Typical, when it's my turn it always seems to be a trendy bar in the middle of Glasgow!

Redruby - We were only looking for ideas for the doors, we have wardrobes from Ike@ that seemed fine until they had to be dismantled when we moved. They are now quite wobbly! We did like the ideas for the insides of the wardrobes though, hopefully the builder can perform a few miracles.

Gers - I too am going along to the swim, it's only a 10 minute bike ride away, think it will be too busy for cars. Hope you manage to sort out your double booking.

Not sure what the weather is going to do, washing may have to hang about again, need to show the front room the duster and throw the hoover around later.

Man came to look at the dishwasher yesterday, it needs a new part - now have to find a time for him to come as they are all day appointments.

tru - have fun with your new chooks.

Hope you all have a good weekend, hugs to those feeling under the weather. Take care. XX

Hello All:hello:

Thank you all for the warm welcome:j

I managed to get away to T***o yesterday and use up the vouchers. Normally use A1di or L1dl but there's certain products we just need to get so it was great to find all the items I needed had some sort of offers on them and even the bread was YS! There's no better feeling than saving on the double:T:rotfl:

I was looking at the simplifying life thread too and there is some great tips there. With the only having cash rather than cards I don't think it would work for me as I work a distance from home and would be worried if something happened I would have no means to pay so only use a debit card. I find this works for me and find that I still think do I need this item as it comes out of my account now and doesn't go on the Never-Never with a credit card.

Hugs to all who need/want them and talk soon:wave:
NOT BUYING IT 2018!

Consumerism is.....buying things you don't need with money you don't have to impress people you don't know and probably wouldn't like even if you did know them.

Happy Saturday everyone ;0)
Just watching the triathlon in Liverpool. So much energy the people have.

I am just happy pottering around the home and garden.
Going for walks.

Today, I am going to declutter our notice board. I am sure there must be something we can take down. A large board full of stuff!

Finished my book - Tents and tent stability by Chris Lown
Lovely travel story about a man traveling and camping around Germany.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
