o2 Upgrading - Is it rubbish or am I spoilt??

Been with o2 for 2 years now. I hated my first phone with them (the o2 XM) but got a free portable dvd player with it (which is now broken), after the first year I found a cheap deal to go with Virgin (with a w810i).

So phoned o2 up last year said I was cancelling and they basically offered a free deal to keep me with free evening and weekend texts and calls so I figured I'd stay, even though I wouldn't use the sim card, just for loyalty perks.

Now both Virgin and o2 are about to end. I had used a cheque back deal with the Virgin contract over the year and had no problems so was encouraged to see such good deals linked from this website at,

I would have no problem doing another cheque back deal although it is a little hassle so was looking for a free contract from o2 again. I asked if they could even match a free year without a new handset like I'd had previously... best they could offer is 200 minutes, 200 texts, paying £15 a month totalling £180 over the year... I declined.

Tried talking anything out of them but they kept using scare tactics about cheque back offers so I said bye. Both Virgin and o2 contracts are under my mum's account name and she is on holiday til next week so I might try again then or cancel.

Do you think I'm asking for too much? Will they offer me much better when I am literally cancelling? Last year the person on the phone was doing everything he could to keep me, this year the people I spoke to didn't seem bothered.

Hi! May i ask with which company did you get your Virgin contract last year?
I've had a nightmare with phones2udirect! In the process of legally claiming my cashback. Steer well clear of them!

Hi, I'd say you're not being a spoilsport at all. I've heard of O2 bending over backwards to try to keep people, and so they should, but they didn't with me, or at least didn't try very hard, not even an offer of an upgrade (I had a Nokia 2600 from them) so I said bye.

If you really like O2, you'd be best going chequeback and a new contract, although you would have the issue of having to port your number to a Pay as you go SIM for a month and then back again.
