Suggest you look at White Mobile instead, which also runs on EE. Much cheaper than Asda Mobile.
Three 3-2-1 trumps all of them, but requires a 3G handset.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

What is the phone and are you sure it's locked?

The model is marked on the phone, and the model number is usually in the battery compartment...
Swapping the SIM out for a free one from another network, eg Sainsbury Mobile or giffgaff (Voda and o2 respectively) will immediately tell you if it's locked to Orange/EE or not.
Most old phones are branded, that doesn't mean it hasn't been unlocked. But if it is, unlock codes for old phones such as Nokia's are free or very cheap.
But without the model number, we can't help you.

If it's an Orange branded mobile, it will almost certainly be locked to Orange. My Mum had an old Orange branded Siemens phone and we couldn't find anywhere to unlock it so ended up just buying her another phone and made sure it was a sim-free (therefore unlocked) when we got her a Giffgaff sim.
