I live in Hertfordshire. For sub £200k here - and this is not anywhere near the most expensive part - you can get a one bedroom house or a bigger flat. There are no houses with more bedrooms available unless bought under shared ownership.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? It's an interesting topic.
I live in one of the more expensive parts of Scotland, and 200K here today will still just about get you a 3 bed terrace in the outer suburbs or a 3 bed flat/maisonette with garden in a decent part of town.
You'd have a lot less choice now than in 2007 for that money though, and you'd really need more like 250K to buy now what you could have then for 200K.
You can still get a reasonable enough 1 bed flat in a safe area for just over 100K, or 2 bed for 160K, but if you want the nicest parts of town you'd add 40K to 60K to those flat prices.

We paid £165,000 last year for our 4/5 bed in Yarm North East England.Have spent 15k on it up to now and another 10k would get everything done so £200,000 altogether.Yarm is considered one of the better areas to live in the North East.0

What you can buy around the average house price across Britain.....This month Nationwide said the average UK property costs £186,512, up more than 10 per cent on this time last year.
This sort of money might only get you a run-down studio flat in London — but head to rural Scotland or Wales, and it could buy you a comfortable family home with spectacular views.
Here are some tempting homes recently on sale, priced from £180,000 to £190,000.

One of the good things about the NW region (and probably others) is that you can still have choice in areas offering a broad price range.
When we bought we could choose a 5 bedrooms detached in a cheaper area, or a 3 bed detached where we live with more expansion potential.
Obviously prices have increased in the intervening years, but you can still have choice with smaller properties.
To me this is a *healthy* market situation. A healthy society has people at a variety of income levels able to buy property.
This makes me wonder how London is still viable for many? It seems that you get limited choice, and pressure to take on whatever is on offer.0 -

In 2006, we paid £200k for a 2 bed terrace in Borehamwood.. zone 6. That would now cost £230-2500 -

Prices for 2/3 bed terraces in the area around Brent cross were about 200k a few years ago and now 400k+. If you had the foresight to buy in 2006 why did you buy in Borehamwood?0 -

Looks lovely!...room to extend, land, by the beach...looks in middle of nowhere potentially but idilic in lots of ways.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D.......
