While checking someone is gas safe registered before letting them touch your boiler is essential it's by no means a guarantee they aren't a cowboy. Decent gas engineers seem to be rare as hens teeth round my way and I've come across loads of dodgy ones

One line from the original post stood out for me straight away:

"They have been paid (cash) for the job of ~£950 in total with no receipt."
