Going to sell the big tv and just watch what we want from various I players available on the internet via Chromecast and/or a desktop computer. At first we will use the 19inch monitor we already have until we invest in a new computer with probably a 23 inch screen. We also have 7 inch tablets for me and the wife and a 10 inch Chromebook for the kids.
So everybody in the house should still be able to watch what they want and when they want, just not live broadcasts.
We are upgrading to fibre optic BB 50 meg to cope with this extra demand. I reckon we'll save a few quid, be more picky on what we watch and not be slaves to the TV and there fore have more time for doing other things.
Sorry for rambling on I just wanted to share my thoughts and maybe offer some inspiration to anyone wanting to breakaway from this TV madness!

Might not be that easy to stop watching live broadcasts .0

A TV licence is only £145 a year, and offers good value for money. Is it really worth ditching it?
Although I agree with you ditching Sky, some people pay huge sums of money to watch what is mostly on Freeview......0 -

Myself and a few friends ditched live TV many years ago.
Not once regretted it or had the urge to go back. All your base are belong to us.0 -
I didn't so much ditch the TV as not get a new one when the old B&W model went PHUT. That was in the 80s before online content, and my first modem was a US Robotics one and you guarded bandwidth fiercely.. old uns will understand!
The only time I wish I had one is when my team is playing away and on the box (home games I watch live), but for the cost of a few pints I can put up with that..:D
There's plenty to do out there, and I don't mean ironing or cleaning! Slightly different if you have kids, perhaps, or are more or less housebound, but I don't know how I'd fit any viewing into my day.0 -
I have kids also - At the beginning of July I ditched Sky TV (was on maximum package) - thought the kids would kill me but they didn't! Instead I signed up to Netflix. Couldn't decide if to try Netflix or amazon - opted for Netflixs as its only a months contract at a time & I'd be able to cancel.
Now I'm thinking the same as you - none of us watch Freesat (so far) its all catch up and Netflixs, so do I bite the bullet and cancel tv license also? or do I wait and see if we decide to watch 'live tv'?0 -

What do you think of Netflix? When we trialed it for a month we weren't impressed with the content.0 -

You need a licence to record a live broadcast.....0 -
We bit the bullet last year and got rid of our TV licence. Never been tempted to reinstate it, as we watch what we need using the various catch-up options (iPlayer, 4OD etc) as well as Netflix. Watch a lot less rubbish now, as we don't channel surf but just watch what we need!0

OP. Why are you getting rid of the big tv? You could hook the chromecast up to that rather than have your kids straining their eyes on a small screen?YNWA
