That's pretty much all you need; just make sure it has an input that works with the camera (composite, presumably). It should work fine on pretty much any PC, so don't worry about getting access to a fancier one unless it doesn't work on yours.0 -

Just thinking about it I bought a lead so I can watch direct from the camcorder to the smart TV I have - does this change things?0

Change what? Only you know what you want to do.
I guess you'd like a back up anyway.
What I want to do is to transfer my 8mm camcorder tapes onto a DVD.0 -

How about

currently standing at £2.99 with less than 10 hours to run. There may be a last minute rush but it might just go for buttons.
Or this one

Also 10 hours to run and currently at £1.04One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

It's certainly a lot easier than what I had to do when I transferred mine.- Fit a Firewire card for the DV out on the camcorder because USB wasn't fast enough to cope.
- Download the video to the PC
- Render the video
- Burn to DVD
One of the other problems I encountered with an old PC was that the CPU couldn't cope with the rate the video data was streaming to it and the result was dropped frames. Doing the same thing on a friends PC with a faster CPU prompted an expensive upgrade, new mobo, RAM, and CPU.
Thankfuly most modern PCs are more than capable of processing video.
And, once the transfer is completed, the DVD recorder can go back on eBay and if it was cheap enough in the first place the OP should get their money back.
Very MSE :money:One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
