Oh Jo, I'm so sorry about little Shane's possible diagnosis. There's nothing much I can say which will be of any use to you. But just remember you have the thoughts and love from all of us here.

  • Hi IA

I have just been catching up with your diary. Sorry to hear about Ste’s accident – hope he feels better soon. Glad to hear it’s not as serious as was first thought.

Jo – so sorry to hear about the baby. What a distressing time it must be for you. Don’t know what else to say really but I will be thinking about you and your family. And yes, I shall be praying for a miracle too – they do happen!

IA, I hope you'll forgive me for hi-jacking your thread yet again.

The doctors were round today and have confirmed the worst, Shane has Edwards syndrome and has at most 2 weeks to live. He is going to be transferred from a hospital which is 90 miles away to one which is only 40 miles away. The hospital he is in at the moment does not have a window which we could see him through but the hospital which he is being moved to tomorrow does. I have seen him on the camcorder but only his parents are allowed in to him. Today, Shanes granny on my brother-in-laws side, brother-in-laws father died on October 7th last year, was allowed in to see him. Tomorrow my Mum and Dad were supposed to be going to see Shane.

I just don't know what to say or do. Am I supposed to get him a little teddy or clothes? Am I supposed to give the parents a card marking his birth? Can anyone advise me as never having been a parent I haven't a clue and I have never been close to anyone that this has happened to?

    Sorry IA.
  • Man, that's such a hard situation. If it was me, I guess I'd just write something, maybe to him, along the lines of "we'll treasure you whilst you're here and just because you're not here for long means we'll have to fit our love in with even more effort", or something to that effect. I wouldn't buy something, instead maybe make a donation to the hospital after the little ite has gone, poor thing. My heart goes out to you and the family.

  • Sorry for the hi-jack, IA, but I wanted to say how sorry I am for your family, Jo4. It must be so very difficult for all of you to deal with.
There is no right or wrong in these occasions - do what you feel you should. I would think a little teddy would be a lovely gift. If you think a card welcoming Shane to the world would be nice, then get it. No matter how short or difficult his stay here may be, I think it would be good to value and acknowledge his arrival. The main thing is that you are there for your sister and bil. My thoughts are with you... and with Shane.

Jo, I had a little girl who was born at 26 weeks, she lived for 9 weeks before she just had enough. I still love to look at all of the things I was given when she was born, her tiny little hat, teddies and cards. These will be special for Shane's mum and dad because you are validating him as a real person who did have a life, all be it a tiny one. Hugs to you all x

Jo, I would get him whatever you would have done before you knew he had a limited time here.

He's your family, he's here now and he is loved, so go with your heart and celebrate his life whilst you can. XX
