So we now use a Halifax Clarity credit card for purchases in France and have set it up so the balance is paid in full when due so no charges. Cash is still a problem, if we timed it right we could withdraw it using the Clarity card just before the due payment date, this would be cheaper than using the Nationwide debit card, I think.
So will the previous posters please check their Nationwide info? I am fairly sure it is no longer the way to go.
The previous posters you are on about posted in 2008 and may no longer even be around.
Nationwide's credit card is still free in Europe BTW - but no good for cash.0 -
I'm in Spain for 6 months and commission fees and bank charges are hacking me off... surely there's another way to get at your cash in the UK... Does anybody know? I thought about opening a bank account here and then doing a bank transfer, but the bank here couldn't tell me whether a commission would be charged on that or not (that was Barclays in Spain)... I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any ideas?0

At the top of this page there is a travel/motoring button - press it and read up on holiday cash etc
A bank transfer is generally an expensive way of transferring funds - a high fee (£20 is not unknown) and the exchange rate isn't necessarily brilliant
The short answer to your problem is to change to a UK bank that levies little or no charge for overseas transactions - the link will tell you the options0 -
If you want to get an excellent rate of exchange for your Euros there is a travel agents offering a free currency card and £10 holiday voucher off your next holiday. They use the Fairfx currency cards, I can't find a better deal than this.
The travel agent is called Bargain Travel House
the website is bargaintravelhouse
For some reason it will not let me add a link as it is saying I am a new member yet i signed up in 2009!0 -
You can get the FairFX card for free here (with a minimum 10 Euro top up): https://www.fairfx.com/ - choose Euro currency card.
Pay using it like a debit card aborad, and there are no charges. Withdraw cash, and it costs 1.50 Euro per transaction.0 -

Hi, I have just married and our reception party was in Ireland. We received euros as the majority of our wedding gifts so I now have >€1000 to exchange into pound Stirling. :j
I would rather not open an account such as previous posts have suggested but can anyone recommend my best options?
Thanks in advance.
