Last time we were out in the Canaries in May 2005, I was changing £100 cash for €151 dead at the Exchange just outside our hotel. I did this several times during the break which is why I recall the rate so vividly.

Am I missing something because if our economy is meant to be doing so well over recent years, how come our currency is now worth less now than it was years ago?

I recall getting more than that. 1.62 cash in hand some years ago, however it is the way of the world.

Yankee Dollar weak, so Euro higher, as countries buy in to the Euro, which just puts the pound at a disadvantage.
  • Hi all, I've never used a card abroad always thinking that I would be ripped off. Can anyone tell me if it is true that I can withdraw euros in Portugal using my Nationwide card and get a better exchange rate than in the UK and also not get charged for the facitilty. It's almost too good to be true, so my sceptical side tells me not to try it. Can anyone update me. Cheers, Dobrodave
  • were making a payment for property abroad please could you tell me where to get the best rate for the euro, and best and cheapest way to transfer it thank you.

The best way by far is to use a foreign currency specialist bank - they have much better exchange rates than hight st banks and charge no fees or commissiion.

you get an exchange rate just off the interbank spot rate. I think the y can handle all the transfer too - so is no hassle.

There is a list of Foreign currency banks here:

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • Best Exchange offer the best rate, full stop. By at least 2 cents on the Euro.

    They quote:

It is indeed rare for a company to make a pledge of "We Beat Them All"; a bold statement of intent that represents the confidence that Best Exchange possesses in its ability to offer a much better exchange rate - whether you are buying or selling - on rates published nationally by any other supplier on any given day. These include the UK's leading High Street Banks, The Post Office, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's and even speciality banknote suppliers like Travelex, Thomas Cook and American Express.
We stand by what we say: WE BEAT THEM ALL!

Doesn't show up on the MSE website currency exchange checker but I've always found that Intercash gave me the best deal.

Thompsons came a close second but the others were at least 4 cents/£ worse.
  • halifax clarity or norwich and peterbourgh society offer the cheapest cards abroads and would probably beat most currency conversions? just a thought

  • Has anyone read the NEW terms and conditions for the Nationwide Flex account???????? I have used their debit card for years in France but they are now charging the same as other cards!!!!!
So we now use a Halifax Clarity credit card for purchases in France and have set it up so the balance is paid in full when due so no charges. Cash is still a problem, if we timed it right we could withdraw it using the Clarity card just before the due payment date, this would be cheaper than using the Nationwide debit card, I think.
So will the previous posters please check their Nationwide info? I am fairly sure it is no longer the way to go.
