Moving to Nottingham

Hi after some advice/ guidance....

Im relocating from Manchester to Nottingham in November for work and would really appreciate some guidance as to the best areas to live. Ideally it needs to be within public transport links of Lenton industrial park as at the moment I don't currently have a car and having to save for the second rental deposit in a year means funds are a little tight at the moment. I have been working here during the week for the last two months but bar the office have only really seen the city centre hotels I've stayed in and the village hotel in Chilwell so my knowledge of anything outside those areas is limited to say the least. As I'm moving here on my own I really don't want to pick anywhere I'm going to feel unsafe in, or too young in (my current flat I'm the youngest resident in the block by at least 20 years) nor do I want to pick the most studenty area possible and feel really really old in my mid-late 20s!!!! :)

Any help gratefully appreciated
I know the rules of punctuation and grammer I just choose to ignore them (or forget them half the time)... Apologies in advance

You could look at Beeston/Chilwell, Stapleford, Sandiacre or (dare I say it) Long Eaton.

They all have excellent transport links to that part of Nottingham. However, if you move to Stapleford, Sandiacre or Long Eaton there's only really one bus company you can use. And that is Trent Barton. They're quite expensive too!!
  • Beeston is studenty but quite friendly and with a range of shops. Lenton is wall to wall students so you might feel left out! Lenton empties completely in the summer months

Nottingham is a sh!thole bar a few areas, think salford and moss side pre renovation. Sherwood crap, bulwell and radford especially are pits. East nottingham is much better, bingham, radcliffe on trent areas to go for if you really must live there

This seems a decent site to compare areas

There was another i found via mse, but can't remember it. Basically tells you how likely it is you'll be stabbed by your neighbours.

    Nottingham is a nicer sh!ithole than Manc-chester.
    Burton Joyce, or further.
  • We've just done exactly the same thing. We are renting a nice modern flat in the Lace Market, which is minutes from the market square. Lots of bars and restaurants within walking distance, and a Tesco Extra and Sainsbury's Local just 2 minutes away.

We love the area. It's obviously not quiet but it's not too bad, and there are plenty of flats that aren't on a main road. It's great to be so close to everything and we aren't using a car at the moment. It's a big development and seems to be full of young professionals. No problem with noise.

A bus runs direct from the bottom of the road to Lenton industrial estate, although only in the morning and afternoon, not during the day. Last bus is around 6.30 I think. It's easy to walk over towards the university if you need something outside those times. It's also possible to walk along the canal, although it's about 40 minutes and you probably won't want to do it in winter. When the trams are eventually finished you'll also be able to use them.

    Definitely recommend it here.

    Rushcliffe borough is recommended.

Beeston and Chilwell are in a mess with the construction of the new tramlines but will soon be done. They are good residential areas, all amenities. Further out you have some lovely villages but transport may be an issue.
Get a mango card for Trent Barton buses.

I bought a house in Beeston last year, transport links are great and will be even better when the tram is up and running. The houses off Wollaton Road are nicer than Beeston Rylands. Crime is low and it's a friendly area. If you are looking for something more upmarket there are some really lovely flats in The Park.

The Park is by far the nicest place to live in Nottingham. It was formerly the hunting grounds of the castle. It's an extremely short walk to the city centre, but really quiet and the houses are beautiful. Unless you come from a v expensive part of Manchester, you'll notice you get less for your money in the Park, so it depends whether you're prepared to compromise on the size of the property.

West Bridgford is second nicest. I'd compare it to Altrincham or similar, well-to-do, lots of nice shops, bars and restaurants, really excellent transport links into the city centre too.

Next up I'd say Chilwell/Bramcote/Beeston - some parts are nicer than others. All still a happy distance from your work. Be aware that parts of Chilwell are on the flood plain if you're buying - look on the flood risk map.

I've lived in Lenton as a non-student. It has a fairly high crime rate, but a short walk to work/city centre. Some of the properties are surrounded by high walls with gates, or there's some nice flats near the entrance to The Park on Derby Road- you might find these tick the boxes for security.
