I've got as far as a) it'll be hot and b) its about 1100 miles before going off route, but thats about it.
Has anyone done a similar trip, or experience of CO,NW & TX that could help with my planning ?
Did a bit of CO a while back
Dakota
Badlands in Dakota
Wounded Knee-Very small cemetry
Mt Rushmore
Crazy Horse Memorial
Wall superstore
Never got to this
Custers Last stand
Had to do this just because of the film!
Wyoming
Devils tower
Then went on elsewhere
DEN-HON-OGG-LAX-LHR.
Our Texas trip a couple of years back was similar to yours so probably nothing I can tell you.
Good overall route planning map0 -

Ooh, thanks for this thread - we are thinking about Texas or Colorado for next year, so this could be really helpful."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0

Progress
I've just booked a Full Size SUV (Chevy Tahoe or similar) for the trip and its at such a ridiculously low rate, that deep down, I suspect must surely be a glitch in the booking system(Its cheaper than an Intermediate SUV or 4 door economy car) . However, I've got the prepaid car hire voucher (from the hirer, not a broker), so maybe it is kosher and for once I've got a sparkling deal.
If anyone is looking to do a one -way car rental in Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas this Summer (I've done a few dummy bookings and it seems to work on the Mid West States), then please drop me a PM.
So, its into Dallas and out of Denver for Summer 2015 (the fares into Austin made it unrealistic compared to Dallas). All I've got to do now is fill in the blanks0 -
Nobody mentioned Carlsbad Caverns so far. Is that because it is not as spectacular as it seems, or perhaps a major rip-off in price? Had it pencilled in as one of our POI's.0

I popped up earlier in this thread mentioning our plans to do Texas and New Mexico this year. We ended up doing around 3600 miles in 17 days (quite a lot).
Carlsbad Caverns is DEFINITELY worth a visit. It's awe inspiring in the extreme. You literally won't believe how big it is. However, it will mean you will never be able to appreciate another cave again.0
