Is it really as simple as you make it HBO? If so, I'm surprised it is more common practice, considering it is obvious that OP's parents are only considering rental for the benefit of their daughter. Where does it stop then? Or doesn't it ever, so that anyone can invest in a property, knowing that they will always be able to rent their property to any family members elligible for HB.

It's not that easy to be eligible for housing benefit and certainly not indefinitely. Plus there is the bedroom tax and benefit cap.

Thanks so much HBO! Yeah I'm off Green Lane too! Hell hole that it is.

Lots to think about there and it's a relief to know it could be possible without doing anything underhand x

Know it well...no wonder you are keen to move! X

Most people don't have the money to invest, want to rent to family on benefits because of family/money problems that could occur or want to go through the convoluted less than easy uncertain process.

Bedroom Tax is only for social housing. For the benefit cap you must be receiving a humongous amount of benefits.

Lol I know Green lane too - run away to Cornwall as fast as you can.

The only saving grace was CJs cafe along Green Lane - cheapest meals that were massive - I'm sure they were responsible for several inches on the waistline - are they still there?

I was depressed in Ilford as I gradually became an ethnic minority with no neighbours speaking English. The Jamiacan lady opposite used to come over for meals so she had someone who would talk English with her. Downsides were after planting out both her an my front gardens someone came along and stole all the plants a few hours later. I put a doormat outside my house and someone stole that a few hours later. I was so happy when I sold up and moved.

Yes it is very very common. Hardly a week goes by without a new claim in my office from someone renting to a relative. Some we reject some we allow. Depends if they have proof it is commercial and answer any questions correctly.

I was working full time up till a few months ago but had a nervous breakdown and subsequently discovered I have fibromyalgia and type 2 bipolar.

But thanks for the judgement. Really hope you or your family never need help and have to deal with the wonderful stigma.

I was talking in the long term which is why I asked if you had ruled out working and paying rent- if you work in the future (and Im sure that you want to ) then you will have to pay the rent- is it likely to be affordable?

Can you get a job where you will move to -You don't want to move to an area where you cant get a job when you are well- do you?

You are in secure housing at the moment- you will be giving that up - what happens if your parents need to sell the house to fund care?

have you looked at a house exchange?

Actually I have a very sever life long disability with a non curable and ultimately fatal condition. At 18 I was told that I would never be able to work. I have worked full time in a very demanding career for 30 years- things change. I still have the condition- treatments change. Lots of people with my condition post on here that they cant work- you can with the right working conditions and the right treatments. Working from home and the internet has also opened up a world of work for many people.

being unwell now does not mean that you will never be able to work.
