The longer you drive a car, the more experience you get - lowering the risk of an accident. Combined with a history of no claims, yes, many insurers will drop your premiums.

The older an animal gets, the higher the risk of it developing an issue - ailments go alongside old age. Therefore the risk of a claim increases, so premiums increase.

You'll find this with any pet insurance, not just Petplan. Infact, Petplan tend to be known for their lower increases than many insurers - though the policy price tends to be a bit higher due to their higher level of cover (and great reputation)

No-claims bonus is against the driver, not the car. It was just as cheap for me to insure a newer, more powerful car when I moved on from an old banger - so presumably any increase in premiums from a more powerful car was evened out by it being a newer car (less risky, as you say). Insurance companies are businesses that intend to make a profit - therefore generally the rule would be the more risk of paying out, the more they charge to recoup any losses.

Loyalty in pet insurance is rewarded by continuing to cover your pet, even if it's diagnosed with an on-going, costly condition. You can choose to move elsewhere - but this will result in pre-existing conditions being excluded from cover.

As said, I have also known of many owners using Petplan who've commented on the very small increases, e.g. £1, if that. Whereas other companies offer big new customer discounts (3 months free, 10-20% discount, etc.) yet the second year, third, fourth year premiums shoot up a fair bit, on top of the loss of any discount. IMO Petplan are the ones rewarding loyal customers with their pricing scheme, whereas others want to pull in new customers and aren't too fussed about their prices rocketing - they must either get enough new customers to not care about those they lose, or 'trap' enough customers with pre-existing conditions who aren't able to move to a cheaper policy.

There are lots of threads on here about different insurers - from my experience, the best prices vary hugely, all you can do is try quotes from the better known names. I always recommended AXA, but unfortunately they've decided to withdraw from pet insurance. I'd try places like Argos, More Than, M&S etc. as some of the top rated. I moved one of mine to Co Op recently - good price but a little less cover than we had an AXA unfortunately.

http://www.pet-insurance-surveys.co.uk/ is a good website, it's unbias and scores on features rather than opinion.

Petplan is the only insurance that covers and will pay for dental - 2 of my cats (one 4 yo and one 8 yo) had dental this year and believe me I was glad I had the insurance.

Not sure where yu are as £15.00 per cat is quite reasonable, I pay just over £20 each for my boys with Petplan (LOndon)

The car comment was because of your own post mentioning "no claims" discounts - something you never see in pet insurance (something I thought you might appreciate clarifying for your "confused mind"). You were happy to continue with the car analogy yourself, so the sarcastic dig is a bit unnecessary.

Silly me for thinking "thoughts and comments" meant you might appreciate some alternative thoughts and comments.

thank you for your input. It's good to know there is a customer who's happy. Glad that £15 sounds reasonable also.. and thanks for keeping on topic rather than going on about cars and whatnot! :rotfl:

i'm not in London, and my 1-year old cat is insured with Petplan - I'm nearly £15 a month. When I was looking around for insurance for him at the start of the summer, Petplan was only a couple of pounds per month more expensive than the other comparable providers anyway, and Petplan's reputation for not increasing their renewal premiums by loads, and their longevity in the business, is what I'm paying the extra couple of quid a month for.

OK- I have 3 boys in London insured with Petplan and 2 girls "up North" (living with my daughter) insured with PetPlan.

I just checked the total for my boys (sometimes get confused as got 6 cats and a dog and one cat and the dog are with Argos Platinum and 2 cats are with my daughter but I pay insurance so...)

I pay £70.00 per month with PetPlan for my 3 boys here in London (8 yo, 4yo and 3yo). and I pay £25.00 per month for the 2 (4yo)girls up North. Generally insurance for female cats is always cheaper (something to do with boys more prone to getting into fights etc I was told when I queried this) and insurance in London is again more expensive (something to do with higher vet fees I was told when I queried this).

I also pay £25.00 per month for my boy number 4 (4yo) and £130.00 per month for my 8 yo GS girl.

Yes, it is a lot BUT - 2 dentals were expensive, dog had something like 14k surgery bills, one of the cats had around 5k surgery bills both promptly paid by Argos (that is why those 2 are with Argos as with pre-existing I would not dare to change but Argos Platinum is great - just they dont cover dental) so.. I stick with insurance.

One thing that I think could be improved - one of my boys was diagnosed with kidney failure and needs to be on special k/d food. That costs me over £100.00 per month in food bills for just that one cat - insurance would not pay for prescription food as thy do not consider this treatment :(
