I kept looking out the window yesterday when one of the sides went up thinking what on earth would neighbours think. I knew it wasn't right. But they said that was what they had been told to do. There was a bit of a mis-communication but it wasn't our fault. ;)

I have 2 poles that are concreted in, will be a booger to dig up and move but think it will have to be done, or guess I could go the rotary route, not quite the same as having the full gust of wind blow through the washing though. ;)

If you have a rotary you can still get it to dry quick enough, just make sure you distribute the washing well enough, small in front, big at back, with plenty of room in between. Have a neighbour who does not follow this rule and her washing dries a lot slower than mine! I've tried explaining it to her but it does not work

rhosynbach, hope things turn out as well as they can for that family, my thoughts are with them at this very rough time :(
