Comparing oversease charges on SIM only contracts
Options
Hi, I run a Dual SIM handset since I travel overseas (mainly in Asia) many times per year. I always drop a local 3G SIM card in so outgoing calls within the country visited are not the issue nor is data roaming, other outgoing calls I either don't make at all (rely on skype over 3G) or I use Skypeout (low cost) and all my UK friends and family know to use Skype/Viber etc so they don't call me, but my customers do not know where I am from one day to next, so it is the receiving of incoming calls that is mostly the cost issue , an Australian customer (for example) calling me when I am in Thailand (for example) invokes all sorts of charges.
So how do i compare
1. Cost of receiving UK origin calls to the handset when I am visiting Asia
2. Cost of receiving local calls from within the same country that I am visiting to the UK number in the handset when in Asia
3. cost of receiving overseas calls from one Asian country when I am visiting another Asian country (again to the UK number)
4.cost of receiving overseas calls from Asian countries when I am in UK.
as mentioned, I don't make calls overseas, I use Skype or Viber or local SIM card in a dual sim phone, but I have been caught out with high charges for receiving calls in the odd occasion especially calls from non UK numbers.
Thanks

You dont mention which sim you currently have.
But normally you pay for incoming call while you are abroad as you know it.
here how they charge you. Since you didnt tell us which country you are visiting and which sim card you have i m just going to assume that you have uk network sim and your network charges you £1.29 per minute to receive a call in asia.
It does not matter where the call is coming from you still pay the same rate for every call you receive it that country.
Please note if you travel to different countrys than the rate of each country could be different to receive the call. Asia £1.29 and in eu countries 8p etc etc.
Above rate are not correct but just used as examples.0 -

You would need to check with network. but normally over one pound for every minute
2. Cost of receiving local calls from within the same country that I am visiting to the UK number in the handset when in Asia
Prices stays the same as 1
3. cost of receiving overseas calls from one Asian country when I am visiting another Asian country (again to the UK number)
Again it doesnt depend on where the call is coming from
4.cost of receiving overseas calls from Asian countries when I am in UK.
You dont pay for incoming calls in uk if you have uk sim. Doesnt matter where the caller is calling from0 -
While you are in any area with 3G then you can use VOIP to receive calls anywhere in the world totally "free" (apart from data charges). It's only when you are in an area without 3G that calls would need to be routed via GSM, which of course incurs inbound charges.0

I didn't say which SIM i currently use because it is not relevant to the desire to compare SIMs, as it happens I am with T -mobile but I want to compare O2, T Mobile, Orange, 3.
I didn't say which country I visit because I visit so many, this year alone so far I have been to India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, China and Korea (I did say mostly Asian countries).
Of course I can receive incoming Skype calls, Viber Calls, etc, but only of the caller remembers to use those platforms, if they just dial my UK number, then I get charged roaming charge to receive that call. So incoming roaming charges I guess is what I am looking to find a comparison table for.
I am also looking at Apps such as Roamer

However if voip qulaity is good on 3g(you might struggle with 3g in some asian countries) than you can setup voip account with sipgate and they will provde you with uk landline number to recive calls on, you can than tranfer all your mobile calls to sipgate and use 3g voip to recive calls for free.
(note you would have to take the sim out from your phone otherwise what might happen is that you are charged for receiving call in asian country than another charge to forward it to your sipgate number, i belive some people have been charged for diverting calls to there voicemails in same way)0 -

Voip should work with any number - you normally get a control panel from your voip service provider where you can set up the routing you want.
Caller must dial that voip number not his normal Mobile number.0 -
