Installing Office with Product Key

As everyone has been really helpful so far, I am hoping people can help me now get Office up and running.
The laptop I ordered was supposed to have office installed, but did also come with the product key as it isn't actually on the laptop. Not a problem I though, and have since tried following the instructions only to go round in circles. Whenever I type the product key in, it asks to sign into my account. when I get onto the account page it tells me I do not have any office products installed. I then choose the option which says 'click to activate' which takes me to a getting started page...only for me to click on this and be taken back to the page in my account telling me I do not have Office installed!!!
Have repeated this process now several times and just seem to go round in circles.
Any ideas on how to overcome this and get it to install?
Thanks

From the start screen, type 'Office'. Then select it and click on 'activate' the type in your key.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Am not too sure where you mean, if I type in the start screen it searches in general for office and the only relevant webpage I can find is the one I have been on for the past hour typing in the code and getting nowhere!!0

What version of Office are we talking about?0

It is Office 365 (though the item description when sold was that it came with 2010 so not sure if this is a mistake!!)
I cannot find any trace of Office on the laptop already.
Thanks0 -
If the laptop was sold with Office 20110 then you want office 2010. Speak to the seller and ask where it is.0

I have that, you need to use https://www.office.com/myaccount and login with a Windows account (or create a new one).
Then it'll take you through activating your subscription to 365 with the product key and downloading the apps (Office 2013) to your PC. 365 is a subscription based system so you won't get anywhere until you have a Windows account wiith Microsoft.0 -

This is what I have been doing. I log into my account and type it the activation key and then it just returns to the same page. Have emailed the company I bought it from so hopefully they can help next week when in the office.0 -

Are you running Google Chrome and/or have a ton of ad-blocking/anti pop-up/anti-spam stuff in the browser?
I had problems with that screen on Chrome, ended up using Internet Explorer without any ad-blocking and it was OK.0 -
Does the Product Key actually state Office 365?
If so, you need to Start here
You haven't actually installed it yet, so how can you activate it?

As explained above, since 365 is a subscription based service, you cannot have bought it with that already activated on it, as it would presumably require your credit/debit card details?
Very few new laptops have MS Office pre-installed, unless it's a cut down or time-limited 30 day trial version or similar.
You need to clarify what you actually bought with the vendor.
But why not just install Libre Office instead and pay nothing? No free lunch, and no free laptop
