Transfer files from PC to laptop

Hi, I have a PC and a laptop, whats the easiest way to transfer the files from one to another?

Apparently you can buy a data transfer cable, but i'm not too sure if that would be effective, and cheap. Any ideas? Thanks.

Can create a network between them assuming they both have network ports, would need a crossover RJ45 cable and its very easy to set up (post back if you do this and ill give ya a quick run down)

How much data are you talking about and would you want to transfer a lot of things in the future? If its just a small once off then a usb stick would be easiest, if its a large once off then an external hard disk. If you want it to be a permanent feature then you'll want to set up a network cable* between them.

*you can also use usb<->usb and firewire<->firewire, possibly more complicated to set up however.

would say that a crossover cable would be both easier and cheaper than a usb stick and quicker if you have gigabit network ports.

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

No wonder, skint1 posted a USB crossover cable, rather than an ethernet crossover. Only worth using USB if you didn't have network ports on both computers (which most do).

  • You normally need to install drivers for those USB cables

I need to transfer my files from laptop to a new PC too.. about 20GB in videos etc..

There is a Belkin USB Transfer Kit for about £10 I've seen.. or is it better to go for a ethernet cable? What difference does it make?

If you have gigabit network ports then ethernet would be much faster. Either way it's much cheaper as an ethernet crossover cable can be less than £1.
