Depends on what you want to use the desktop PC for. As long as you aren't into gaming or video editing then a basic Core i3 should be sufficient. If you already have a monitor then there's no need to spend much more than £200-300 for a good system.0

82 now. Stock appears to be increasing.
Swings and Roundabouts on this one.
Very good processor for the price, but everything else is quite basic, as this is a machine designed for business.
PSU, only 180 Watts. Intel 2500 Graphics, no WiFi, no Bluetooth, no USB 3.0, no HDMI. 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD also at the low end.
Not entirely clear, but this machine may have a licence for Windows 8 Pro.
So a mixed bag.
Not a big issue to add Half length PCI-E cards for USB 3.0 and Wireless.
So overall, not bad.0 -
- Windows 7 64 bit. None of that Windows 8 rubbish.
- Tower or mini-tower. These SFF or odd shaped pcs are ok until they break. Then you need to buy odd shaped parts to fix them. Expensive, odd shaped parts.
- plenty of usb ports, maybe a couple of usb3.0 ports.
- plenty of Ram 8gb would be good.
- hard drives negligible importance. all new pcs will come with 500gb /1 tb drives minimal.
- as the last few years have shown, pc prices are gradually increasing. Possibly because there's less demand and less being built. You could hold out until the Windows 9 arrives, but there's no guarantee it'll be any better an Windows 8.
As stated before here, I purchased a Zoostorm i5 around Christmas last year from Amazon and couldn't be happier with it. PSU hasn't failed yet either!0 -
The last two times i've needed a machine i've just bought a refurbed ex dell business PC off ebay.
Something like this

Just stick a second internal drive into it for storage and use your current keyboard mouse and monitor.
I usually get about 4 years out of them or longer.
If you're just surfing, emails, social media and downloads i dont really see the point in spending hundreds.0 -
Well you could trade in your old PC and get a nice desktop with Windows 8.1 for £100

I was going to mention this one. The old PC will be too old for the trade-in (needs to be under 5 years) as I looked at doing it. Even without it's still a pretty good machine for £160.0 -

Mine is donkeys years old and having revamped it once with the help of people on here, I've just lost my job so have decided it would be a good time to get a new one while I still have some money to do it with. Then hopefully it'll keep going for lots more years.
I'm not techie, I don't have a clue what the different processors are or mean and I don't do gaming. It's basically for everyday browsing, word processing, doing a bit of work from home. I do have a laptop but I'm happier doing proper work on a desktop - personal preference thing.
Budget - no idea as I don't know how much these things usually are, £400 ish, give or take? I prefer new to refurb and something that'll last rather than cheap and cheerful even if it costs a bit more.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start. Thank you.
Hi
£400 if your using it for general everyday applications and the odd gaming.

Zoostorm are very reliable i install them for many of my customers, and never had any issues all come with collect and return warranty. These are perfect and are cheap and reliable if you only need a desktop.Kind Regards,

Thanks all - haven't yet had chance to look properly at all the suggestions due to a flurry of CV writing and job applications. But I've got more idea what I'm looking for now, so thanks for the advice.
I've already got the monitor, keyboard etc which are working fine, so yes it is just the desktop I'm after. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
One more for your consideration
