I'm guessing the washing machine isn't for her business but she bought for her business to fiddle the VAT?
I think you lose some consumer protection when you buy goods through the business.0 -
I think the title should read, "Research before you buy, and don't complain about consumer rights when you're not acting as a consumer"
Makro have done nothing wrong here!0 -
Well thanks for the sympathy and concern guys. She uses it for her business in that she washes towels in it. As I said, her business is very small. Thanks for nothing.0

OP's original post
"My daughter has a small business operating from home so she bought her Hoover washing machine from Makro under her business name 14 months ago. It has now broken down and of course Makro take no responsibility saying SOGA doesn't apply to them. Hoover want to charge £100 or £14.99 a month for a new drum, the engineer saying it will take 10 days for the part to arrive.
I know that things don't last as long nowadays as they used to but for a make like Hoover to need a new drum after just over a year's use in an average (single parent with 2 youngsters) household seems a bit much to me.
Isn't anyone responsible here? My daughter is struggling to make ends meet, working for herself rather than relying on benefits but now has to take on an extra debt each month just to get a necessary household item repaired!'s"0 -

So she is using the washing machine more than a normal single mother with 2 children would?0 -
The size of her business is irrelevant, do you want facts and advice or sympathy.sylviesinc wrote: »Well thanks for the sympathy and concern guys. She uses it for her business in that she washes towels in it. As I said, her business is very small. Thanks for nothing.
The fact remains, your daughter has made a legitimate business purchase (we'll go on your word for this) and as such can't expect to be covered by the full extent of the SOGA with regards to consumer rights. Nor, by the sounds of it expect the machine to last as long as if it was used in a normal consumer setting.0 -
If the washing machine is a capital asset of her business then the repairs are also a chargeable business expense and will ultimately decrease her tax bill. That's the benefit of purchasing as a business.
As the drum has failed and your daughter washes loads of towels it may well be that she has overloaded the machine and therefore, inadvertently, caused the fault.
The perceived lack of sympathy is because your daughter's personal circumstances are irrelevant to the question you asked.0 -

Hundreds of children murdered in Gaza, yet your faith in humanity is shattered over a washing machine?

Wow, your faith in humanity must have been very small if a few slightly critical forum posts have totally shattered it.0 -
Sorry Op but as said as you buy from Makro its purely a business to business transaction B2B so SOGA do not apply here. Surely its better for you if people told you the facts rather than give you inaccurate information just to appease you0
