Meter reading by supplier

Hi all
Is there a legal requirement, and if so at what frequency, for suppliers to read meters themselves.
Thanks

They have to see the meter once every 2 years and for electricity meters the clock resets on change of suppliers. Thats why suppliers are putting clauses in the T&Cs that customers must submit readings x times a year. It is likely to increase to 5 years or more soon.

BG have got permission to go to 5 years although they are still doing 2 year must reads on many meters, especially prepays. They reserve the right to look at any meter at any time if something like meter fraud is suspected.
Possibly BG have got this dispensation because they run a very good RPU unlike the rest of the big 6 and certainly the micro suppliers.
I am not so sure it is actually a legal requirement, just OFGEMs licence to supply terms and conditions rule

Makes sense to put your meter readings in monthly to avoid large bills/ disputes .
Makes sense to answer the right question.

I never submit meter readings. I do occasionally read the meters - when I can be bothered -just to check that the DD is about right, which it has been for long enough now. What is the supplier (EDF) going to do about it?

Why be so childish about it? Is there some battle between you and edf? If you read your meter, you can submit the readings in seconds - I'm assuming you have the internet ;)

I can tell you what EDF will do about inspecting meters every two years..nothing..I ve been working for them for the past 6 or 7 years and only this year have EDF started complying with OFGEM two year must reads. We now get a very few EDF must reads, code name SLC12 s . These are properties that have never had a meter inspection by independent meter readers in donkeys years, hence quite a few I ve been to wont answer the door at any hour and could be bypassing meters to their hearts delight. Disgraceful way to run a business in my view and Scottish Power are not much better when I found a 3 year bypass in place in outside boxes the other week. Only British Gas seem to comply properly with OFGEM guidelines

You've been lucky. In the past 18 months, I have had 2 letters from EDF apologising for not taking a DD. They didn't offer to change the amount due!! This forum has many examples of customers who thought everything was fine until a metered bill hit the mat behind the front door. That said, each to his or her own.

Not sure what's being childish about it. As said, I occasionally check that payments aren't going adrift, and so far they haven't. I'm not a meter train-spotter, having virtually no interaction with the supplier. I used to submit readings when they operated a "read and reward" scheme, but they pulled it, so I stopped.

Sooner you get a smart meter the better Gingerbob if you cant be bothered to check your usage.
