Is there any possiblilty that this could have JUST been an ebay problem affecting only the ebay passwords?
YES, many hackers only target ebay so it is possible you suffered an "attack" designed only to get your ebay passwords.
The reason is, ebay is a soft target, often they do nothing about fraud involving stolen passwords. I've heard many people complain that ebay don't even answer emails reporting fraud, or when they do it's an automatic message telling them to contact the local law enforcement agency.
On the other hand, if someone gotyour bank password and took all the money out of your account you would be straight on the phone to the bank, or round to your loacal branch demanding they do something about it.
Even so, you should not use any other passwords until you have cured the problem.0 -
tom and barbara good .... this is a reinforcement of what has been said earlier with one extra.
First you must go through all the steps if the Malware Removal Sticky as Reluctant Spender recommends. Take your time. The instructions are easy to follow and they will do you good.
Also use whatever other tools have been recommended here.
AND ... use this anti rootkit scanner ...
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-rootkit/us/frt/0
Just download it (free), install it and get it to scan your complete system.
If it finds anythign nasty it should fix it but, if not, then SAVE the scan report and post it here for more advice.
Oh yes .... and that PC World subscription .... be very careful. Not long ago we were all discussing a survey of various PCW stores which found that they often didn't fix the problem, didn't know how to fix it (or didn't want to) or - at worst - told the computer owner he/she needed to buy a new machine. In this case there were a couple of minor faults easily corrected. If you are really stuck find a reputable PC fixer in your area. Maybe even ask here on MSE. We know lots of people between us....
