Hi.

I've recently purchased a TV (TX-32AS600B) and a Blu Ray Disk Player and HDD Recorder (DMR-PWT530). Both Panasonic.

I'm very happy with these but I can't seem to get the same behaviour as I had on my old setup (CRT TV and Humax PVR). I'm sure its some setting somewhere but I can't see it.

What I'm used to is that, when watching the TV, I switch on (or take out of standby) the Recorder and the Recorder takes control by switching the TV to the channel it is tuned to.Then when I put the Recorder into standby, the TV automatically reverts to showing the channel it is tuned to.

This is the way my old setup worked and actually it's the way the Humax and my new TV worked together (while waiting for the new Recorder to arrive). But now that I've got the new TV and new Recorder connected, when I put the Recorder into standby, the TV screen goes blank (not into standby) and I have to select an input to get the TV picture back on.

Can anyone help with this? The Recorder is connected to the TVs HDMI1 socket and there's a coax (aerial) lead between Recorder and TV.

Thanks.

Should the aerial lead not go from wall socket to PVR ?

Have you tried using the 'TV' button next to the 'AV' button, assuming your tv is Panasonic ? I have to do this, after using my Wii on AV2, so the set goes back to HDMI1.

Yes, that's right - the aerial is connected to RF In on the recorder and the recorder has a coax lead from RF Out to the aerial socket of the TV. Also, there is an hdmi lead from the recorder to hdmi1 on the TV.

I'm really surprised that, with all the connectivity options and cleverness built into these two boxes, not to mention that they're both the same manufacturer, I seem to have lost a function that existed between two much older and more basic boxes.

I would have thought that the TV would be able to detect the recorder going off line and automatically switch to the signal coming in on the coax lead (after all, Panasonic must know that their own recorder redirects the incoming signal over the coax lead to the TV when it goes into standby).

Yes, pressing TV on the tv remote does that but why is it not automatic?

    Thanks.

Was the old setup connected by SCART, not HDMI?

Yes, the old connecton was scart. Thanks for the link, although I'm not sure what it's telling me.

I thought I'd linked directly to the paragraph on switching, using a set voltage at pin 16 (?) to prompt the receiving device to switch automatically to the device providing the switching voltage.....

It is a while ago but if remember rightly when I had a Panasonic DVD recorder connected to my Panasonic TV I had to have it connected with both HDMI and scart leads to get full switching functionality.

You need to make sure Viera Link is turned on in the TV and recorder settings. Viera Link is Panasonic's name for HDMI-CEC which is the setup that will change the TV input when you turn on a Blu-ray player/recorder/etc.

You may need to use a specific HDMI socket on the TV as well. Look at the TV instruction manual for info.

I had similar issues and they turned out to be HDMI related, not on Panasonic kit though.

It seems that on some TVs only HDMI 1 responds automatically to whatever is connected to it. My PVR worked as expected on HDMI 1 but my DVD on HDMI 2 didn't automatically change the TV input when turned on, I had to do it via the remote.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

Thanks everyone. I'll have a look at those suggestions. Viera link is 'on' on the tv but I need to check the recorder. Been away a couple of days, so might play with it tonight.

Well, I've had a play. It seems that the only way to get the recorder to 'take control' and automatically switch the tv to the channel the recorder is tuned to is to press a button on the remote that gets the recorder to actually show something (other than just the broadcast).

Eg you could press PROG/CHECK to see the timed recordings you've set up. Or DIRECT NAVIGATOR to choose the source and programs recorded on that source, to watch. I also think pressing GUIDE will do it. Pressing any of these buttons results in the recorder taking control and presenting the appropriate screen on the tv but simply pressing the standby button just turns it on but doesn't alter what the tv is showing.

Viera is turned on on both machines and the recorder is connected to hdmi1. Neither instructions give advice on which particular hdmi to use, other than to say an amplifier should be connected to hdmi2, which has ARC.

So it seems I just have to get used to pressing either of the above buttons first or manually select the recorder after turning it on, which isn't what I had before using older kit. Pity. Also, when turning off the recorder, I have to remember to press TV on the tvs remote, to get it to show the picture.

    Still, worse can happen.
