There were a few cars I liked the look of. So I asked for some prices, those are the ones that fall within budget.

When you say you liked the look of, I assume you mean you looked at reliability, presence of dpf, cam belt or chain etc?

When I took a test drive the dealer only spoke normally to me rather than tried to overly sell the car - which I was quite happy with.
    What will your verse be?

Bear in mind that a lot of the Renault will be from Nissan. I have a Megane with the 1.5dci which is a Nissan engine. Also the electrics are Nissan too.

My Megane is two years old with 36k and has had no reliability issues whatsoever. The company I work for has used them as company cars for the last three years so the 1.5dci engine is a good one.

Yes, thats exactly what I meant.

My train of thought went along the lines of...
What do I like the look of...
    How much will it cost...
From those that have got this far, lets ask people that hopefully know what they are talking about what their thoughts are on my shortlist in conjunction with what I read on the internet to narrow it down.

  • Different dealerships have very different practices on test drives and what they will do will also vary by customer and how committed they are to buy etc.

A few years ago I was looking at getting a 2 seater car and went for a test drive. There was a fair amount of chat which was fine and the guy complained about a former customer who they'd taken on 3 test drives, had lent him a car for a weekend etc but he'd ended up buying on line for a £3 a month price difference.

When we got back to the garage my wife asked to be taken out in it, she didnt have her driving license then but wanted to make sure she'd be comfortable in the passenger seat. They refused to allow an unaccompanied test drive and were very reluctant to take her for a drive themselves. More than a subtle difference to what they claimed theyd done for the other potential buyer!

Might be worth having a glance at the latest issue of What Car, which has a group test of small crossover cars. They rate the Citroen Cactus best, with the Renault coming 3rd out of 4 - although that was with a 0.9 litre engine, so going for the 1.5 might overcome the performance issue they had.

There's a slightly different version of the article here.

I did look at the cactus as I do like it. But I cant find when it will be launched or get prices on it.

I had narrowed it down to the mokka and captur, but looking at that link the mokka is noisy which is the one thing im trying to avoid.

Aha, that would probably explain why I'd never heard of it then :D.

That's a rubbish way to look at cars.

Get your bum on the seat an make sure it is comfortable (some are narrow so you feel enclosed.

can you can reach all the controls

have comfortable foot locations (had to eliminate a load because the foot well is cramped and offset and no foot rest for both feet)

Can you see out the windows and mirrors.

If sharing how easy to adjust the seat and mirrors.
How big is the boot(holiday bags)

A pretty car that does 2mpg more will be useless if it give you leg ache and a bad back.

If you want to check the feel of a lot of brands get down to a car supermarket.

Then do the dealers on the short list and test drive the current versions.

    Then narrow on comfort.

Never seen the point of the look on the outside, it's the inside you have to live with.
