A bit of a problem with an ASUS Nexus 7 bought from Amazon

I think I should have asked this question before doing anything but even though it might be late I'll still ask it.
Bought a nexus 7 2013 version from Amazon just after Christmas 2013.
Very happy with it until I noticed some dead pixels. Then i noticed more when i did one of those pixel tests.
about 3/8 of the screen is scattered with large dead pixel blobs, right in the centre.
I had a google about what to do and decided on contacting Asus for a repair.
Contacted Asus who emailed me some pre paid postage and told me to send it to them.
Didn't hear anything until I got an email yesterday saying they don't have the part to replace (the screen I presume) and that's it. No return email address or contact details, just a link to another form to fill out if I'm not happy.
Can I ask them to send it back to me and get a refund from Amazon or has that ship now sailed because I sent it off for a repair?
Am I being impatient and should I calm down and wait a bit?
Have I been a bit daft googling about Asus customer service and started to get myself into a tizz for no reason?
Any help, advice or points in the right direction would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I'd speak to amazon before doing anything else - even getting it returned. As amazon may just confirm with the manufacturer it was sent back then issue a replacement or partial refund. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

I have not seen this before from Asus/SBE. Often they send emails saying that they don't have the part available and are waiting for it - is that it? But never that they won't fix it and that's that.
I think it might be worth giving Asus a call (the only number I can remember is 0870 120 8340, I'm sure you can find a cheaper alternative) and asking what's happening.
Or, if it's SBE repair centre, their number is 01233 619320. You can also check online here https://extranet.sbe-ltd.co.uk/enduser/index.php - you need the GBB repair reference and your serial number (MSN number), although it doesn't give much infoSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

They have said they don't have the part and left it at that with no other details.
They haven't said they won't or can't fix it.0 -
Nearly half the screen has dead pixels?0

I readabout 3/8 of the screen is scattered with large dead pixel blobs
as 3/8ths of the screen has dead pixels, but I can see how it can be interpreted either way. Guess the keyword was "scattered".
Ok, to reword
Nearly half the screen has large dead pixel blobs? How big are these blobs as it would indicate a complete filler (beyond acceptable) of the screen.0 -
At least Asus have admitted it's faulty so I'd contact Amazon and see what they say. Hopefully they will replace or give a refund.0

I think if you speak to ASUS there's a good chance that they'll replace it. If it goes back to Amazon for them to replace they'll surely just send it back to ASUS anyway so the end result from their point of view is the same. The only issue you might have then is that the serial number won't be the same as the one that Amazon supplied, so if you had further issues that would be an extra complication.0
