Using cash dispensers which offer Euros

I have noticed more and more of these appearing in London (particularly Raphael ones). Has anyone used these to withdraw Euros rather than buying/exchanging at the Bureau de Change or bank?
Are you charged commission for an exchange?

Raphaels Bank ATM withdrawal : €1.205 for £1
Mastercard rate via ATM with fee free card: €1.261 for £1

  • If you can charge your bank account in euros, then you're fine. If the machine charges you in pounds for your euros, you aren't fine.

The only one I'm aware of that will always (I think) put transactions through in EUR is the one on Bishopsgate in the City. If you have a card such as the Metro Bank debit card you can withdraw Euros at the interbank rate.

I've seen it reported on here that the Raphael's ATMs will charge in EUR if you have a EUR account (or perhaps only if you have a EUR account based in a Eurozone country) - but then you'll have to get the money over to the EUR account, which will probably be as expensive as changing cash.

Just so that you know(I'm sure that you do), there is no NatWest/Ulster Bank ATM at 98 Bishopsgate. It's probably located at 15 Bishopsgate EC2N 3NW.

You can blame Google Maps for that... the position on the map is accurate, however.

Beware of the EUR cash machines at UK airports, I've looked at a few of these and the rates are staggeringly bad (they charge your card in GBP not EUR so it doesn't matter what card you use).

You'd get better rates on the UK high street!

I have some in last few weeks that dispense Euros at the full Mastercard rate.

There's a Raphaels that dispenses € in One New Change shopping Centre off Cheapside. No idea of rates as I usually get from my own bank.
It only takes one tree to make a thousand matches, it only takes one match to burn a thousand trees. As well, the cars are all passing me, bright lights are flashing me.
