Potty Training

Does he actually know that he is meant to urinate in a potty/toilet? With our daughter it took a few days of her seeing us go to realise that you can see in a toilet,, not just a nappy.0

Actually between 2 yrs 10 months - 3yrs is the age where the majority of children are ready and can make the connection. It causes them (and you) the least stress and you achieve the goal of training quicker!
All three of mine were around 3 when I started, all three did it within one week, and were dry day and night within 3 weeks of starting! No stress, job done!0 -

Current advice is to potty train when the child is ready. Trying to potty train too early can have a detrimental effect.0 -
Want to start off by saying potty training can be stressful for all involved! If you are sure he is ready to do it and won't go back to nappies/pull ups then you have to carry on. My 2 yr 8 m has been in knickers for a month or so and we are still having problems with poo but is dry day and night!
Sounds like you are doing the right thing trying to distract him while sitting with books etc, would a sticker chart help. I found with both of mine that once you catch that first wee and praise them then it starts to click. Another option is if he doesn't like the potty sit him on the toilet instead.0 -
He's happy to sit on the potty and knows when he needs to wee. I just need him to do that first one in the potty I think. At the moment he seems to be afraid to relax enough to release his bladder muscles. He seems to be holding it til he gets off the potty.Goals for FebruaryDeclutter 2/50Money Made £0/£200Overpayments £0/£2000

Is he showing signs of being ready? Rather than you feeling he should be. I know that sounds very judgmental, but I really don't mean it to.
My little boy is 2y 2m, which I feel is a bit young. However, he knows and can tell us when he has been. I can easily have him without a nappy on for several hours without accident. He understands that we wee and pooh in the potty or toilet. He does like privacy though and is far more likely to go when I leave the room and then proudly present me with a full potty (weeks only at the moment).
Once we've been to playgroup tomorrow morning we don't have any plans for a few days so am planning to have him bare bummed and see how we do. If he's getting the hang of it by Monday then great, if not we'll wait a while and try again.
TBH I'm not in any hurry, he'll do it in his own time. Besides, I'm going to miss seeing all the nappies on the line (although can't wait to not have to drag the change bag everywhere).0 -
Just wanted to add that my second DS never ever used the potty. From the first day we started potty training he would only ever use the toilet, so we just got him a step. After that, no accidents at all. It was actually much easier in the end as with my eldest DS we then had to retrain him to use the toilet standing up!0

My youngest DS is very nearly 2 years 10 months and we have just started to potty train this week. He suffers from delayed speech so sounds similar to your DS. He has taken to it very well, my only worry is that he can't tell us when he needs to go. We just keep reminding him and then he will trot off to the potty. I even braved the park yesterday! He does love going on the toilet too, so can recommend a soft training toilet seat. He's a big Mickey Mouse fan and I found one in Home Bargains for £3.49. Good luck xThank you to everyone for sharing competitions!0

Oh and just to add, I am a big believer in waiting until children are ready and decide themselves. Some are ready at 2 and some, like all my children, are nearer 3. But because I did wait, they all got it within a few days with hardly any accidents.Thank you to everyone for sharing competitions!0

I agree with a lot of advice given here. We tried every few months since DS was two. But he was never ready and we didnt force the issue, plus we had a New baby when he was 2.7. Then at 3 and two months tried one day again and he wad try day and night from that day. We always took him with us to the toilet so he knew what to do (not that it helped with doing it earlier, but it made him feel comfortable with the idea). Also def try and let your husband as often as posdible accompany him to the toilet. DS uses the potty but def prefers the toilet as he sees us use it.
Good luck
