Exam results and misinformation.

Got a bit of an issue with my other half and his son.

The son lives nearly 300 miles away but in all the years we have had close regular contact, no maintenance issues or problems and a good relationship.

However there has been a constant problem over the years of the mum seming to almost encourage absence from school which has obviously had an effect.

we have had regular reports sent to us from the school until the last one which never arrived.

He has taken the GCSEs and has told his dad of the options he is considering dependant on the results. One of which is to stay on at school for the 6th year and has said that he can decide this when he gets the results.

But when we looked on the school website there is a deadline for applying for 6th year which has already passed. This along with the missing report which he says 'there wasnt one issued last year'!!!!! is causing alarm bells to ring.

My partner is going to contact the school re the missing report when they re-open. Hes now suspicious that his son has in some way stopped the report from being sent out as they are never really very good.

Of course its now exam results day and there has been no phone call yet (he has rung and got voicemail) so I have a couple of questions-

Do all school get results today?

Is it feasible that they havnt yet been recieved till ater in the day?

Is it feasible that there would be no school report issued in the final year?

Are the results published on line anywhere?

Thank you for reading

It's A level results today not GCSE results which are next week.

I would have thought most parents had the date engraved on their hearts tbh .

With regard to the report situation we have received quite regular updates with predictive grades against what our DS was currently achieving...
the last one we received from school was Feb Half term....I am aware all schools are not the same but it is standard to have some communication in year 11.

Again with the A level options ours choose their preferred options conditional on their results probably sometime around april time.
Once the results of GCSE's come out then there is still a little time before the start of term in September to make any changes because of grades etc....so what your son may be saying is that he has the option to pick his subjects once the results are known...which again is quite plausable.

I would contact the school...but if I were you I would also speak to your son(?) to confirm when he will be getting his results and the way forward....the conversation at this stage neednot be heavy or accusational mor over something to keep the lines of communication open between you all...
    Good luck...

Every school issues reports at least once a year.

For a school not to issue Y11 reports is unimaginable.

    Some serious porkies,,I fear!

Thank you for the reply. He will contact the school when they re open. His son said his results were due in a couple of weeks but that was 2 weeks ago thats where the confusion comes from.

He has said that he can make a decision wether to stay on for 6th form or try for one of the local college places dependant on his results. My partner has queried how such a decision can be made in the few short days between exam results and term starting but the answers are quite evasive. he has also told us that he has been for an interview at a local college for a course but strangely mum knows nothing about this. He has also told his dad it is a certain course then in the next phone call siad it was a different one.

We suspect he has a had a bad year at school and that he is very worried about his future options but even though there is no heavy pressure from his dad he seems very closed on the subject.

Dad is aware that if he too heavy or pushes too much then son will just stop the phone calls. Meeting are a lot less frquent since he turned 16 as he seems to want to be out with his mates at weekend and is always busy which is as it should be at his age I suppose. he also has a saturday job and as we work in the week it was always sat or su when we travelled to see him.

So because contact is now pretty limited to phone calls we dont want to do anything to hinder that line of comunnication.

I know what a delicate situation it can be...and in some respects what the boy is saying is quite plausable...and its not uncommon at all to lose the ability to communicate with a 16 year old...its happened a few times to us in the last year in the run up to these exams...

Probably one thing you can be sure of is that he took them....so in some ways see what next week brings in terms of results and take it from there...

Look at the positives...he has a saturday job...so even whilst education might not have interested him at least he is interacting with people in a position of maturity and presumably getting a little money too....that cant be a bad way to help any 16 year old along in terms of the way forward in life
This week possibly isnt the time to second guess....wait and see what next week brings...
    All the best...

The school will almost certainly have been open today for the A level results and will be open again next Thursday for the GCSEs, especially to discuss options with those hoping to go into 6th form. I'd leave a message to ask when someone might be available, and try again next Thursday if you haven't heard.

My school didn't have a sixth form, so I could be talking nonsense, but is it possible that as he is at the school be doesn't have to make a formal application for the sixth form? I know I had one or two friends who moved to sixth forms in other schools, so they probably had to do applications, but could it be different for your own school?

It's also possible that he's had an interview for college without him informing his mum. I was treated as an adult by college - I made my own application and went to my own interview (just a chat, basically). My parents only knew because I told them. In fact, my school were more involved than my parents (not a slur on my parents - they didn't need to be heavily involved in the application process).
