After all, if you consider fraud is okay, why not theft?
Don't take Thumbremotes posts seriously, I think he's just here for comedy reasons!0 -

take it home. The next day, return the damaged one there and insist on a refund.
And if PC World refuse the refund stating that they think that the damage was caused after purchase, the OP will then have two cameras.
If the camera was accepted and a refund issued, the swop could possibly come to light if it was examined during a repair process (the intermal memory might have a permanant record of usage). If this was to happen, the OP could possibly find themselves being looked into for fraud.
All in all, not one of your best suggestions.0 -

That's exactly what I thought.0 -
I'm not saying you should buy another one but if you did, don't open the new one until you have returned the old one. PC World are happy to take back unopened goods.
If they do take back the non working one there's no way they would come back with any questions or try to mention the Fraud word.0 -

Because this may be one of the rare cases when two wrongs can indeed make a right.0 -

Unless the op ends up lumbered with 2 cameras.0 -
Thanks for your comments Meer53. As I mentioned I bought the camera late on the Friday after work in fact, and flew off on holiday at 06.30 Saturday morning. So basically I was unable to contact the store until I returned.
I understand your comment, and I do take a margin of responsibility for taking the camera with me, simply because I had no other camera. That said I still feel that I've been treated poorly by PC World. Thats my opinion and you have yours.0 -
To money saving king, Shaun of Africa and Zandoni I still believe that honesty is the best policy, so I think that I will just mark it down to experience, and go spend my money at a small local shop who values his customers and still believes in customer service.0

While I understand that you flew off the next day, there were a variety of ways to get in contact with them and it would have saved the hassle you now have. Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or even a email, you would have had some record of contacting them saying you have a issue but are out the country.
While you may have been unable to contact the store, there were plenty of other options and it may be an unfortunate costly mistake learnt.0
