PC World refuse to change camera

  • Hi All
Thanks for your comments. I didn't get straight back to them simply because I flew at 06:30 the next morning and to be honest it wasn't a priority in the grand scheme of things.
I guess that was my mistake and now I have to pay for it.

The camera was only £350 and as Tinkerbell28 says "how far do I really want to take it"

It does tick me off though, that I can be sold something thats been damaged in store and it down to me to prove it. The lesson learnt is that I should have asked the sales rep to open the box in store and prove that the camera was working before I paid for it.

Thanks again all for your advise....

    Hi Unholyangel and thanks

The LCD screen is not working on the backside of the camera. The manager has told me that the damage has been caused by impact or crushing.
There are no marks dents or scratches on the camera. I did point out that there was a small dent on the packaging but he said that this had nothing to do with it.
His opinion means nothing. He needs to provide proof plain and simple. I'd be contacting PC World customer services if I were you, clearly the manager doesn't know what he's talking about and trying to fob you off.

Wont cost much to write and post a letter before action to their head office.

Small claims court would be relatively inexpensive also but as above, depends how far you personally want to take it.

At the very least I'd try the LBA route.

Also, did you purchase it on your credit card? If so the credit card suppliers are jointly and severally liable for the contract under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Any remedy that PC World owe you can be claimed from the Credit Card company.

Go to another branch of PC World. Buy the same model camera and
take it home. The next day, return the damaged one there and insist on a refund.

It's not down to you. Like mentioned, it's within 6 months, therefore it's down to the store to prove one way or the other.

Involve the manufacturer - they are often sympathetic and will know of batch issues that affected certain lines the store will not.
  • Thanks Chaps
Unfortunately Frugal I bought my camera with a Visa debit card and so, sadly, it is not covered.

I have written to Panasonic Buzby but they took a back step and said that they wouldn't get involved in a dispute between a retailer and third party. Also the damage seems to be post production and possibly happened during dispatch or whilst in storage.

The problem I have Jim Jupiter is that it's my word against theirs and they are claiming that because I left it for two weeks they believe that the damage was caused by me.
Sadly I think that Tinkerbell and CoolHotCold are correct in saying that they would see it as a "I broke my camera on holiday " story and that is why I left it for two weeks.
Maybe RemoteThumb is wright and I should just be what they think I am (a liar) and be a little devious.

Neil MCL. I have contacted their customer services. They were the ones who told me to get an independent report. So basically not interested.

Thanks again for comments and advice. It seems all I can do is not use PC World in future and warn friends of their attitude.

Why would you warn people about PC Worlds attitude ? You have to take some of the blame for this issue, if you'd notified them as soon as you noticed the problem and didn't take the camera with you, they may have been a bit more accomodating.

Why not suggest going in to a PC world store and stealing a replacement camera?
After all, if you consider fraud is okay, why not theft?
