Silly question re sim

I've had my mobile phone for years and thought I would treat myself to an update. I assume not all sims are the same size. How can you tell if your sim is likely to fit another phone and different make and model?
Please be gentle as I have no idea.

Your provider should be able to change your SIM for any size you need, keeping your number of course. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

There are only 3 sizes: standard, micro, and nano.
The former two cover most phones, the iPhone 5 being the main user of nano SIM's.
But, as above, since your current provider wants to retain your business, they will happily provide the size you need.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

You can recently done it, but its tricky.0 -
Contact your network and they will send you a new sim out. Then you just need to call them to perform a simswap.
Failing that, upgrade through a networks retail shop and they should be able to do this in store for you.0 -
Out of interest, if you do swap Sim size as outlined above, do you lose stuff stored on the old one when you ask the provider to do a sim swap?0

If you do want it cutting, go to any of the small mobile market stores or independents and they will have a cutting tool that does the job in nano seconds. My local one doesn't even charge for the service. It also leaves you with the residue which you can use to put the smaller sim back into a normal phone......So, it's not tricky and a lot quicker than relying on your provider and swapping the number over...Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
