I.ve been given a bit of a mission .£500 Max to spend on a P.C and The person (my Neice )States that she wants A Real nice monitor ..When pushed she said the shiny L.C.D screens that Look Like T.V's.
I was thinking of the acer aspire T180 http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=0&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=123119
as the base unit
Leaving either £200 for the monitor or If I can find a real bargain then maybe try and bump the on board graphics up with a card.
Any Ideas or pointers would be much apreciated.

I note you are in telford in which case Daws Computers in Oakengates have some cracking monitors a pretty good prices.
I bought a 19" for around a ton and the image and response rate are very good0 -
I buy loads of stuff from here.

I bought a 19 in wide screen for £100 in store. The reason it was so cheap ? It was on display so they were willing to do a deal. I buy most of my stuff from them. Well worth a visit if they got a store near you. I haven't bought on line from them because its easy for me to pop in.You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.0 -

If I have made a mistake please feel free to have a go at me ,but. These screens are TFT and what I was hoping to find out about was the LCD sceens .It may be that I am just getting confused .On laptops especially you will see 2 types of screen .A tft type screen that tends to look a little softer(may not be the right term ) then you have the sony vaio or Apple kind of clear screen ..Looks much more like a CRT or TV screen only flat ...This is the type she was saying she wanted ...I have had a look around and most of the lower priced monitors (other than CRT) look much more like the softer TFT type screen ..This may be me who has the wrong end of the stick here...But when I look at these screens (on laptops ) there does seem to be 2 different types .
What should I be asking ,searching for ?
cheers for the replies ..and any sugestions for a bargain graphics card to buy for this base unit please feel free to list ...I like ATI over radeon myself ,but only because in games ATI seem to feel a bit quicker tha NVidea.
Would this Graphics be too much ati radeon x1950 pro £71.52 http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/newsletter?operation=shoppingCartAdd&productId=27834&context=superSpecial0 -
For your purposes TFT and LCD mean the same thing.
Technically, TFT is a specific type of LCD technology.
I think maybe you're getting confused between the LCD screens with a glossy surface that you get on some laptops now, and the vast majority of LCD screens which have a matte surface.
Really the matte surface is better for working as it reduces distracting reflections. Some laptops have glossy screens apparently because it makes watching DVDs better, though I can't really see the benefit myself...student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
So Is there a way of telling form the descriptions on-line which monitor is Glossy and which is matt...?0

I would go and have a look at Daws Computers in Oakengates.
The one I bought had a glossy image which does make things brighter. Some people like it others don't.0 -
That's an excellent price for a very good card, but unless the PC is going to be used for modern(ish) games/similar it's going to be overkill.Would this Graphics be too much ati radeon x1950 pro £71.52 http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/newsletter?operation=shoppingCartAdd&productId=27834&context=superSpecial
The onboard graphics that ship with motherboards these days are more than sufficient for most everyday tasks except graphic-intensive games/3D applications. As an example, my neighbour has intergrated graphics while I have a X800XT PE (this was £300-400 3 years ago). There's no visible performance/enhancement difference whatsoever.
If however you must have dedicated graphics, one of these should be more than sufficient::
- MSI RX1050-TD128E Radeon X1050 128MB = £22
- Gecube X1550 128MB GDDR2 DVI PCI-E = £25

Right then I've been and made a couple of purchases .I got the base unit from Ebyer...£300 then as I thought given the choice of nice monitor or big nice monitor my Neice whent for Big nice monitor which is the Xerox 22in widescreen XM722W TFT Monitor Glassfront (seems thats what makes them shiny ) this with P&P came to £205.00....Then I realised I haven't bought any speakers ...I can put some of the old ones I have in my cupboard ...But thought if any one knows of any bargain speakers that would look nice on a desktop (and sound ok ) then drop a link here ..please.0
