I would write off the debt, then put his sofa up for sale for £50 giving his name, phone number and email.

Clearly this person does not value your friendship.

I'd get any fees paid up front next time!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

If anyone asks you to list an ebay auction on their behalf, then ask for the fee upfront first (if you know how much it will cost off top your head) or if you get the feeling that this will happen again with the person now asking in the future just say, Sorry ive been stung for fee's in the past by someone who said they would give me the fee but then did a number on me so I don't do it anymore unless I get the fee upfront.

    I wouldn't write it off.

I would stop texting him and emailing though and nip round if you can. Much harder to ignore.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

He works odd hours so it's difficult to time it. The wife doesn't work due to illness, she is a peach but her English is not great. It would get the message across though.
I also really really do not want to go back to previous flat. Ever. Very bad 8 years mostly and it's not in an area I would choose to go back to if can be helped.

BUT didn't actually think of it (Doh) so thanks for suggestion. I will mull it over.

Just to say thank you everyone for their input, it's really helped!

Thanks also to everyone that didn't write me off as some newbie troll.
I seem to see a lot of people saying there have been quite a few of these in the last few weeks, so thanks for your help and for giving me feedback. :A

Does he know that £20 is a lot of a money for you? I would go down that route, say in normal circumstances, you wouldn't pester him but that due to your circumstances, it means struggling to do the weekly food shop. Let him feel guilty.

Yes he knows I am not working due to a back operation I had 6 weeks ago. He also knows we are on a low income and have been for years though he doesn't know the true extent of it but he's not stupid.
I also told him twice over email that my fees are now due and I am asking everyone to pay up (Not just him) as I really need the money back.
Everyone else (relatives mostly) have paid up or allowed fees to be taken from their sale payments.
I also mentioned things are tight right now as normally I wouldn't pester anyone and would be happy to wait otherwise (as you said)
    BUT
He isn't the type the feel guilty over things he feels he shouldn't have to pay for.
In his mind he was SURE the sofa would sell and therefore didn't mind paying. However as it didn't sell, why should he pay out of pocket.
That's how he sees things (given previous conversations with him and my experience of flat shares in younger days in regards to money)

I think what I will do:
1: is leave it another 2 weeks in case he is on holiday (yes I know he has already had plenty of time but in case)
2: Email and text again mentioning the fact I have waited and now desperately need it and make a suggestion he can either leave the cash for me in the old place or send me a cheque.
3: Think about popping round there unannounced one Saturday afternoon.
4: If no go to any, write it off.

    Lesson definitely learned!

As another poster suggested, it might be worth asking for fees upfront or at least a holding deposit of say £20.
Such a simple answer but not one I had though of!
