If you really cared about where your cat was and got up to you would take them out on a harness or cat proof the garden.

Cat owners need to accept responsibility for their pets. Klyr is totally right.

you are v. lucky if your cat will wear a harness. Not many will. It is against their nature to be tied up

my cat was abused by some cretin and will not tolerate anything around her neck.

cat proofing gardens is almost impossible unless you live in a concrete jungle. My cat scales a spikey shrub to hop over a 6 foot fence

I know cats are very fickle and will wh*re themselves around a lot, but surely in this sort of scenario, where the neighbours KNOW it is your cat and are keeping it locked in THEIR house, renaming it etc, that is stealing?

I was going to say exactly this. Much as I dislike the idea of classing living, sentient animals as 'things' or 'possessions' it IS, technically, stealing. They are taking in a cat they know is not theirs and assuming responsibility for it. Not nice.

If you can't cat proof the garden then was it the best decision to get a cat?

Cats can easily be trained to accept a harness but not many cat owners can be bothered as it takes time and patience and lots of praise and rewards!!!

We thought we HAD cat proofed the garden - the cat had other ideas.
I think the number of cats in existance far, far exceeds the number of people who can cat proof their gardens. What do you suggest happen to the surplus cats? I think giving a cat who had a bad start in life a home is the main priority, not 'cat proofing' a garden

also by cat proofing a garden you affect the habitat of other animals such as hedgehogs.

patience and praise is in abundance in this household, but it isn't easy when some vile person strung my cat up by her neck.

It is impossible to cat proof a garden and in any case - unfair on the cat and also why should you have to ?
What happens if a neighbouring cat - gets in to a "cat proof" garden and can't get out again ?

I agree, cats are generally so wily that they can get themselves out of anything (unless they have links with Schroedinger - or do they? ;);)).

I once read in a QI book that, in the USA, there are eight times more people who claim to own a cat than there are actual cats in existence in the States! Cheeky cats; they know their onions. One day they'll enslave us all.

As the saying goes - Dogs have owners; cats have staff.

What happened to your cat? And did the said cretin get punished for it?

she was kept tied up with a rope around her neck. she was terrified of men when she came to us, hated us walking past her [she had been kicked previously] and is still wary of people touching her neck.

no one was punished, apparently the rspca could not prove who was responsible.
