Boots contact lense scheme ...check your DD

I have been on the scheme for as long as I can remember - very good service with check ups etc and always fantastic service.

I order 30 prs of lenses which last me 3 months as I only wear them at weekends. I pay monthly by direct debit £10.30 (i.e £30.90 for 30 prs)- which I am happy with.

As this summer I have used more pairs than I anticipated and have ran out, I decided to pop into my local boots to find out when my next delivery was due and if not, see if I could purchase some extra pairs. I was offered 30 pairs for £25.

I queried this as this is obviously cheaper then I am paying by direct debit i.e. 3 x £10.30... they are coming back to me but have not got an answer as of yet

I am obviously concerned I have been overpaying for at least 3 months if not more.

Please go check if you are on the scheme as £5.90 per month is alot to be overcharged and I wouldn't have known if I hadn't gone to buy more lenses!!

I shall update you on their response, but has anyone else encountered the same?

I had similar experience: their argument is that the scheme include free check-up...

If your lenses are available from somewhere else cheaper, say Asda or Tesco, log onto your Boots scheme, print a copy of prescription (which specifies the details of lenses and date of next check-up) and buy the extra from the other place...

  • Hi,

That's interesting - what brand of contact lenses do you get?

I do the same as you - only wear contact lenses at the weekend, but I actually order 30 pairs a month as it's cheaper than ordering 3 x 10, which is annoying but the way they do it. How much would your DD be if you did it that way? I then pause the DD when I get a build up. I do wonder how much a pack of 30 costs in store though....

Also, they're making a change to the way they deliver and moving people onto quarterly deliveries which is also irritating. So now I have to pay for a quarterly box over 3 months, get delivered 90 pairs and then pause the DD for a fair while.

I must admit I like being able to pop in whenever for check ups and the 10% off boots own brand stuff though.
  • I have my sight test and contact lens checks carried out by Boots, but I never buy my lenses from them.
I prefer to get Boots to give me a prescription then I buy the lenses online and doing it this way works out far cheaper.

Just out of curiosity fififoofoo, what brand and type of lenses do you use?

Focus Dailies .. I know they are cheaper elsewhere I suppose but I am (was) happy with my DD and the way it worked.. I am looking at alternatives now though - although still hopeful for a positive outcome

I wear hard lenses, and have done since I was 16 (I am now 62). I wear them 12-16 hours a day, every day. I am on my third pair now.

    3rd pair in 46 years!!!?
  • OP do ask how much it would be to have 30 pairs per month - I know Boots do charge you more if you order smaller amounts.

    Yep.

Last time I went to the optician he said that if you're lucky enough not to scratch them a single pair can last 40 years. These are the very old-fashioned hard lenses (all that was available back in the 1960s) - not gas permeable hard lenses.

I suspect the comment was in relation to your prescription remaining unchanged for all that time (eyesight deteriorates as people age), not that the glasses themselves lasted that long.

I only wear them at weekends as on computer lots and my eyes don't like them .. so they'd be a waste to buy 30prs a month ... still no reply from boots ... I may call them now..
