I can make Yorkshire Puds, roast potatoes and gravy. The only thing I really struggle now with is fried eggs end up all crispy underneath. I have managed this year to teach myself to make omlettes from this site, they are now fab, but still can't do fried eggs.0

Me and my OH were rubbish at yorkshires... but we got the recepie that toby carvary use... and now they come out perfect every time! x)0

Gypsy tart is the thing I can't make. It doesn't matter what recipe I use I can never get it to set. It just seperates and makes a runny mess.
My friend has the same problem so at least I know it isn't just me.0 -
Slabs of meat.
I can cook a chicken, turkey etc but steaks/chops I cannot master, nor can I roast beef to my liking.
Cakes - tbh I can cook them but they always look a little haphazard!Put the kettle on.0 -
Scones, mine come out like biscuits. When I was working (I was a cook) I could make a hundred light fluffy 4 inch high beauties every time, but half a dozen for tea? Not a chance......................0

You are cooking the eggs on too high a heat;)"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
Very amusing thread! :rotfl: Love it!
I'm a very amateur cook but can do most simple stuff OK, except recently when I tried the very simple (and very yummy) Twink's Hobnobs recipe from these forums.
Was doing fine until I put them in the oven (at the correct temp), then they spread out into one big flap-jacky lump, -which would have been OK, only when I took them out of the oven, the butter and syrup looked like it had tried to part company with the oats and flour in the cooking process and the whole thing was just a sticky, curdled-looking mess!
Despite appearances, they still tasted nice but as I was the only one who dared eat them, won't be making them again anytime soon!
Oh - and people struggling with omlettes, I did too until my mum taught me this trick - whisk your eggs in a bowl first and pour into hot fat, turn heat down to medium and let the base of the omlette set, then put the frying pan under a pre-heated grill to cook the top, which rises and goes a lovely golden colour. Bit of a cheat but I love them done this way and it's so easy!

How very odd. I thought the directions fro Twinks HobNobs were fool-proof. Did you follow the recipe exactly, like melting the butter, syrup and water together then adding to the dry ingredients?0
