I wonder if something like 18185 will work on cable telephone? They might, if they have a freephone 0800/0500/0808 access number to use from non-BT lines.
My wife's with her family in Russia, and I've called her every weekend for the last 4-5 weeks since joining 18185, and spent about 2.5 hours on the phone, and it's only cost me 1.54 including VAT for the whole lot, which is great (despite my initial niggle with registering on their website using Firefox, which is now solved).0 -

If you use the 0808 or 020 access number different rates apply.0 -
I'm not with BT, but I've always paid 1p/min to call a Russian landline since I signed up to 18185, and that's the rate they quote on their website. If you use the 0808 or 020 access number different rates apply.
But, there's probably a difference with the call connection charge to cover the differential.0 -
Really does pay to check before you call. Sounds about right for an old-style phone provider to me.
Could be worse, when I was in Las Vegas, hotel phone said "calls are charged at standard AT&T IDD rates". Fine, so I used the phone plenty, turned out I had not read carefully and it was "OPERATOR-CONNECTED IDD rates". Operator connected calls being extremely expensive, something like $12 for a 30 second call to a US mobile. Bill came to about $300 for our 4 day stay for the calls.0
