How to fix a turbo for £4

Well, only if its a sticking VGT unit!

Diesel cars (many) now come with the added joy of a Variable Geometry Turbo which adds a finely machined vane unit in the sooty exhaust flow, result? a bit more power and a lot more faults!

Garage says £600

I did my Mondeo Mk3 TDci 130bhp for £4 with a drill, some plastic pipe and a can of Mr Muscle foam oven cleaner, took 2 hours start to finish

Get yourself a £15 "Formidable F super" diagnostic (needs a laptop too) and save a mint in fault finding (stuck VGT is a P132b DTC code)

Garages? i s**t em.....lol

have fun out there

The F-Super is hardware not software. Under £15 on ebay. The software comes with it.

Its a USB device so requires a laptop or similar.

The F-Super is yes. Plenty of other options for other cars. Is its a newer than 2004 diesel most OBDII scanners will work. Handheld or PC based.

Some cars have specific units that read manufacturers codes better than generic ones.

I would tackle most jobs on a car, but I am wary of dismantling a turbo. The things spin at such high revs, that any mistake in in rebuilding it could be disastrous.

The turbo cartridge comes as a complete unit. As long as you dont take that apart there is little for you to get wrong.

Its when people start messing with the impellers and the shaft. Then it needs to be balanced again. You cant do that at home.

You don't need to take the turbo apart to clean using Mr. Muscle. One of the best sets of instructions (which can be adapted for non-VAG cars) can be found on Briskoda here:

Is there a detailed description for the Mondeo MK3 TDCI anywhere I can find? What is the drill for?

    Cheers
