    There is a known problem with batteries running down and not recharging properly. Sometimes the battery can be reset, and it is worthwhile trying this before buying new. Search for "resetting battery" and there is quite a lot of advice available.

    Vista from a couple of years ago?? Are you sure? The warranty would have been for three years and that is long gone. Time flies doesn't it? ;) Five years perhaps. :)

    But oh my goodness.... by reading the online manual you pointed me to, it seems the battery is now charging again!
    I can't believe it! Thank you SO much. I am lost without constant access to my laptop as I use it for EVERYTHING so this is such a relief.

    The advice is to run down the battery once a month to make its life longer, and to never take out a non-fully charged one to store.

    Unless you need to move it around, why not just use it on mains power all the time?
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
