Car for long commute
Hi guys,
Looking for a bit of advice regarding purchasing a car for a long commute for a new job.
The commute is a 90 mile round trip for ~5 days a week which will be lasting at least 12 months. Pretty much the whole commute is either motorway or dual carriage way.
Any ideas on specific suitable cars for this type of commute?
I'm 24 and have been passed for two years so need to take into account insurance costs into this also.
Cheers

Budget? Do you need decent luggage capacity? 3 or 5 door?PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0

Apologies I just noticed I didn't include budget.
Probably around 8K.
Don't really need much luggage space, and can be either 3 or 5 door. As I have no children, the car will be used pretty much just for work.
Many thanks.0 -
That sort of mileage makes a diesel vehicle a consideration. Or one of these small engined, turbo-super-charged petrol vehicles.
Another consideration is ergonomics ... how tall are you?
And buy second-hand, perhaps through a manufacturer's approved-used scheme.0 -
Many thanks Bod. I'm 6 feet tall and quite broad!0

Couple of suggestions, one of which is zero VED;

Many thanks Tilt. I had been looking at a Punto.0

I have a MK2 HGT which I have owned from new (March 2000). It's been a solid, reliable car and EVERYTHING still works and it drives like a car half it's age. It's currently on around 75k miles.
To add, it's my 14th Fiat and without a doubt I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the marque to anyone. I would deffo test drive one before making your mind up.
BUT finding a good dealership can make all the difference.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
a 2.0 L turbo diesel that returns 50 to 60 miles per gallon on a run that will give a fuel cost of £11.00 to £12.00 per day so around £60.00 a week in just fuel cost
and with an annual mileage of near 24 thousand miles a year servicing and tyres will also be a considerable cost
I would be looking at a ford focus or Mondeo with a 2.0 L deisel, a VW golf or passat, or a skoda octavia with a deisel, to meet your criteria my suggestions would be based mainly on economy0 -

Many thanks.
I do a 94 mile a day round trip commute and have a 2012 1.6TDI S Golf.
With steady driving i am getting 65.5mpg brim to brim over the last 25,000 miles or so. Best yet was 69.7mpg over a tank full.
60+ mpg on average would be very easily acheivable.
Road Tax is £30.
You should get a 2010 / 2011 car in that budget.0 -

Thanks Paul. I had looked at a Golf also. Would a slightly older golf be a good choice if my budget dropped to around 5k? Trying to work out a range of choices depending on a range of budgets.
This is the first time I've had to consider a car for a long commute so feeling a little lost to reach the best decision!0
