NiftyDigits wrote: »Seriously, you are looking at perhaps £8 for a CPU and some thermal paste, in order to quadruple your capability. Your CPU is only a little more powerful than the first ATOM CPU in Netbooks. I'm surprised that you can multi-task at all.
I used to have a similarly powered CPU in mine and suffered from some buffering and freezing, so invested in a videocard.
A £20 videocard will be at least six times as powerful as your current card.
So then I could play Full HD material without buffering. But I would still have slowdowns when I had multiple apps and browser tabs open, So I invested in a Core2Duo E6300 for £6.
Now everything is fine. PC is also a lot more quiet.
If you are happy with video performance, just upgrade the CPU.
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6300 £5.99 if you have Socket LGA775.
Bear in mind that your CPU is a single core unit from ten years ago. Moving to the Core2Duo above brings you in line with a modern low end Processor, when it comes to processing power.
Thank you for the response.
Whilst I am happy swapping RAM, and hardware modules/software replacing the CPU may be a step to far.
How would I know what socket I have? Is the CPU a simple push fit or is it bonded in some way?
Can you suggest a suitable thermal paste, is this to bed the chip into the socket?

Replacing it is easier than you might think. The most difficult part is undoing the cooling mechanism(fan). Usually just un-clipping is involved. You can search online to find your particular setup, so that you know how you unclip and replace. In mine, I had to 'reset' the clips.
CPU much the same, un-clip and remove. Drop the new one in and re-apply the clip. There is a little arrow on the CPU, take note of where it is, so that you can put the new one in the same way. It sits on a bed of pins, so if you drop it in the wrong way and then apply the clip, you can bend the pins and destroy the whole thing. But that would be careless, so is unlikely to happen.
The cooling mechanism sits atop of the CPU, in order to draw heat away from it. So it is essential that it makes good contact with it. Guide. No need to sand anything.
That is where the thermal paste comes into it. You put a tiny blob(slightly larger than a rice grain or an 'x' shape) on the plate of the cooler, after wiping away the old Thermal paste with an alcohol wipe. You can buy Thermal Paste with alcohol wipes included for less than £2. Example here
Of course you need to unplug from the mains, turn the switch off to the power supply and to earth yourself before beginning.
First thing we need to do is to identify your Motherboard.
Perhaps you can start by running CPU-Z. Unzip the contents and run the application.0 -

I would prefer not to disclose the service tag.
Have flashed the BIOS to v 7.0
I have purchased a CPU."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I had (and still have) this issue on my high spec W7 machine.
Videos are choppy to the point of unwatchable in FF, Chrome and IE.
Downloaded Avant browser and they work perfectly.
Not the best solution as I like FF, but when watching You-tube or any other streaming site its Avant or no video!!
I have tried everything with no success. Flash player 10 and earlier versions work perfectly, but obviously its too much of a security risk. Any version after 10 gives the same issue.0 -

Thanks I will give that a try."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Are you joking?
The Tag just identifies the original configuration of the machine.
There is nothing that I will be able to see that links it to you. This is a ten year old machine.
Who else would need your Service Tag?
Weird.... Perhaps best for me not to continue if you don't have that most basic trust.0 -

Thanks for your help so far. I am sorry you have taken offence none was intended.
The service tag allows DELL to verify the state of the PC for diagnostics and suggested driver and software upgrades. therefore there must be a link to my PC. Providing the service tag in my mind is a risk albeit a small one.
I am not suggesting that you would seek to manipulate that information but this is an open internet forum.
I am open to your suggestions, is there no other way to relate the information you require. You appear to be almost there on your own."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Just out of interest what CPU have you bought? It appears the Dimension 5000 can't accept Core2duo CPU's (shame) so you're limited to Pentium4 series.
Useful info at Dell Community
The service tag simply shows what the original shipping specifications of that PC was and will not disclose other info such as user details, location etc. but if you prefer not to show it then that's your choice of course.
