Orange 25 month contract

Options
Hi all,

I signed up to a 24 month contract with Orange in January.
Recently I was offered a job in Dublin. I will need to break this contract soon.

What would be the best way of doing this? I don't want to get hit with big fees for doing this though. I was thinking of closing my bank account and leaving and getting the phone unlocked before I did this, would this be the best thing to do?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

That's certainly the best way to wreck your credit records for the next 6 years, trigger a debt collection agency and prevent yourself from ever being able to get another mobile contract (or much else) for a VERY long time. Why should the rest of us end up paying more for your mistakes?

Of course, if you stay abroad you may escape the effects, then perhaps you could do a runner from another country to avoid fulfilling your contractural obligations there.

Do it, get your just desserts!

On the other hand, if you wanted to do it properly, and do the best thing...Sell your handset, pay off contract and move. You signed up to a 24 month contract, ask Orange if you can downgrade to the lowest possible and settle the account.

If you want to keep the handset you would need to pay off more from your own funds.

    Your options here are

    1) Your suggestion of stopping paying the bills. This is a very stupid idea. It would wreck your credit rating for the next six years, making it very difficult to get any kind of credit. Also this wouldn't just go away. Chances are they would pass your details on to debt collector who would chase you.

    2) Cancel the contract and pay the termination fee which will most likely be, the amount of months left X the monthly line rental. You can always sell the handset and put the money towards paying the bill.

    3) Ask Orange if you can lower your monthly tarrif (tho this may not be possible until you are half way through your minimum term) and let the contract run it's course, paying it each month

    4) Find a friend or family member who will take over the contract.
