How much does your weekly shop cost?

I'm just wondering how much people spend on their weekly shopping? My partner and I currently have a budget of £60 per week to spend on food, household products and toiletries, but as I'm giving up work to start university next month I'm wondering if realistically we could cut that down a bit.

We eat a mainly vegan diet and buy very little meat or dairy. We do buy most of our fruit and veg fresh and generally do our shopping at Tesco. We rarely buy alcohol.

It would be nice to get an idea of how much other people spend in order to get some ideas and tips to cut down but hopefully still eat a healthy diet.

About £110 at Tesco for my Wife and myself, plus dog. Certainly don't buy luxuries and always only buy from list.

Mine should be averaging around £60 a week for two adults and a teenager now, including household items. I cook from scratch a lot but we also get through a lot of the basics.

For vegans you might find bulk buying rice, beans and lentils would cut down your costs significantly. If you find a local Asian store then chappati flour and enormous sacks of onions might be in your favour.

I have a nearby Chinatown and their noodles are nicer and cheaper and available to bulk buy.

For any vegetarians I'd recommend having a look at where you can buy in bulk instead of wholefood stores and supermarkets. If you have a dark store cupboard you'll soon realise the savings even if you have to travel quite some way once every couple of months for it.

The dried beans and lentils take some getting used to (remembering to soak them overnight and planning a day or so in advance) but the variety is amazing and so many dirt cheap recipes online.

If you need quorn or other meat replacements just wait for a 3 for 5 offer at supermarkets and stock up. The bulk buys are where I save the majority though.

That and find a local Asian greengrocer and you can eat very well for pennies. Supermarkets near me are not great for variety or price in fresh fruit and veg.

Chappatis take minutes to make and are super easy. I'd also invest in a slow cooker, you only need a cheap £10 one and your cooking time would be down to throwing things in every morning and serving it when you get home.

Three for five? Think I'll pass on that, thanks.

Mine averages between 67-70 pounds a week for two of us inc dog tins/treats. This could come down a fair bit if I was happy to eat a lot more carby foods but fish/quorn is relatively expensive.

Around £25 per week for two adults, toddler and a dog. We eat from scratch everyday and take lunch to work. We don't drink alcohol or fizzy juice which makes a huge difference. And I never miss a bargain either!

Two adults.. We do £160 per month but working out weekly is difficult as we do a big (£40\50) shop at the start of the month and then portion out the rest. It includes house produce, cleaning fluid, wine etc and dh's toiletries. Spirits and my toiletries (organic because of skin condition) and anything fancy food wise are paid for our of our own money.

What does this bit mean? Are you both buying food separately? And is that included in your £160 per month or not. Or is the real figure something closer to £250 per month?
  • £20 per week, 2 Adults. It's surprising what you can save when you have no choice! Honestly, we don't struggle on food either.

When we are both working, i'd say we would be happy with around £30-40 per week shopping.
