Since both Aldi and Lidl will, on average, be around 30% cheaper than the major supermarkets across the board, isn't it quicker and simpler just to shop there? The quality's as good, or better, and for anyone who hasn't tried them lately you might be surprised at how comprehensive their range of food is these days. You used not to be able to do a full shop there, but you can now.

If they ever open one near enough to me I'll try it and let you know.

Having said that, I just looked at the aldi site and in the banner on the front page, the one that proudly shows off it's best offers, it said Magnum Classics were £2.

So I then visited the Morrisons web site, searched for Magnum Classics, and they are only £1.50 in Morrisons.

They are also 2 for £3 in Tesco, so maybe shopping at aldi is not such a good idea.

Aldi and Lidl don't tend to compete effectively on branded goods. Where they really score is on own label goods, which are much cheaper than the equivalent items in the main supermarkets. The 30% savings I quoted are against supermarket own label goods.

Apart from things like the excellent ranges of continental meats and pastries, which are far superior to those sold in the likes of Tesco, most of the grocery items are made by exactly the same processors that supply the other supermarkets. Aldi cakes, for example, are made by Mr Kipling, and until recently McVities have been making their digestive biscuits. McVities have now changed their policy because Aldi were selling indistinguishable products at less than half the price of the brand!

I've got a question, hope I can explain this !
The items that you know are cheaper elsewhere and you just put those through together - does it matter that some are cheaper at different supermarkets ie does it still count if say 4 are cheaper at M's, 2 are cheaper at T's and the rest cheaper at Asda?? Or will they all have to be cheaper at the same supermarket to count for price difference? It's just that if you do the Asda price Guarantee online it splits the cost into different supermarkets so it got me thinking.
Hope this makes sense as my little head does have a tendency to get confused sometimes!

Does anyone know this? As obviously no ONE supermarket will probably the cheapest overall for all 8 or 10 items will that generate NO refund on the price promises? Don't really trust the price promises, pretty sure they'll wriggle out if they can!

Try Lidl's/Aldi's own Magnum type ice creams - they are delicious.

But the choc-ices are 99p in Aldi.

So that's 51p extra in Morrisons. (52% more expensive)
And you have to spend 303% of what you would pay in Aldi if you go to Tesco (yes, you get double - 'only' 52% more expensive pro rata.*)

Even ignoring that those prices in Ts and Ms are still 26p or 21% more expensive than the usual price for standard Magnums (£1.24 for three.)

    * Well, per lolly. Aldi's are 9% bigger so difference per ml is 65%

Well no, it would cost me £9 and 2 hours sitting on a bus!

You, and many on here always assume that everyone can just pop out and have all the big supermarkets within a short distance. But many don't, I have a morrisons and a tesco. I live on my own and don't do enough shopping to make it worth while doing an online shop. Even if I did I wouldn't do it. Going to asda is out of the question for me, I just would not do it.

Have you thought about moving house (at a cost of only about £10k) so you live where you can save thruppence a week on your shopping?

    :)

The banner for the Magnum ice creams is showing a comparison between the original Magnum lollies and the Aldi version. As far as i'm aware, Aldi don't stock Magnum lollies. The clue is in the wording : "Like brands. Only cheaper"
